Holiday apartment in Rijssen-Holten – Nature, Culture and Trails

Rijssen-Holten is located in the Sallandse Heuvelrug and Twents Reggedal areas, in and around De Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. The Holterberg forms the southern part of this national park. De Borkeld is also situated between Holten, Rijssen and Markelo: a heathland area with several burial mounds dating from before the Common Era.

Nature

Natuurmuseum Holterberg is known for its life-sized dioramas and a collection of more than 1,000 European animals. The museum houses an information point for De Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park and a tourist information point; various hiking and cycling tours start from the museum. The Holterberg is ideal for hiking, cycling and mountain biking. In the Bos van Daantje Das, children can complete nature activities, play, build huts and have picnics.

Signposted hiking, cycling and horse-riding trails run through the forests around the De Borkeld recreation area.

In Holten, free all-day parking is available at the Groentransferium or at P+N Dorp, next to the NS railway station. P+N Berg is suitable for shorter visits to the Holterberg.

Culture and History

In Rijssen, the Internationaal Brandweermuseum displays firefighting equipment used around the world. This includes helmets from Japan, South Africa and China, as well as complete fire engines dating from before the Second World War. The collection comprises around 15,000 objects and illustrates the development of firefighting over the centuries.

The Informatiecentrum Canadese Begraafplaats Holten presents stories, photographs and exhibitions about the 1,394 graves in the cemetery of honour. In Rijssen, the Rijssens Museum is housed in Havezate de Oosterhof. The museum gallery de Oosterhof hosts duo exhibitions by recognised artists six times a year.

Parkgebouw Rijssen was built around 1914 on behalf of jute manufacturer Ter Horst as a cultural centre for the citizens of Rijssen. The building is significant from a cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning perspective; theatre performances still take place there. Another historical connection can be seen in the Leemspoor network: it transported clay from pits to the brickyards in Rijssen and extended for around 12 kilometres between Rijssen and Markelo.

The Enterse Zomp is part of the history of the region's waterways. In the 18th century, this traditional flat-bottomed boat transported, among other things, wood and peat along the Regge. During the boating season, the Enterse Zomp offers trips of around one hour from the Pelmolen in Rijssen. Traditionally, the Lommerdmarkten also take place in the centre of Rijssen on five consecutive Thursdays in summer.

Hiking and Cycling

The Pieterpad, Reggepad, Marskramerpad and Sallandse Zandloper run through the municipality of Rijssen-Holten. A particularly distinctive trail theme is the 50-kilometre Wereldtijdpad between Rijssen and Holten. More than 2,000 year posts stand along the route; each one features information and an image relating to a specific year. In addition, the Wereldtijdpad offers themed walks ranging from 4 to 10 kilometres.

For shorter routes, the Ommetje Holterberg circular trail starts at the Dagrecreatieterrein Holterberg and is 7.7 kilometres long. Rijssen-Holten has a signposted network of hiking paths, allowing visitors to put together short and long walks according to their own preferences. By bicycle, the Toeristenweg Holten crosses the Sallandse Heuvelrug to Nijverdal. The municipality also has an extensive cycling network that can be used via numbered junctions.
