Hof van Twente combines historic gardens, extensive country estates and a dense network of cycling routes with distinctive cultural sites. Landgoed Twickel combines centuries-old forests, distinctive wet heathlands and farmland in a varied cultural landscape. At the same time, it offers numerous opportunities for hiking and cycling, both independently and along a guided route.

Culture and gardens

The historic setting includes seven castles and historic manor houses: Kasteel Twickel near Delden, as well as Huis Nijenhuis, Kasteel Warmelo, Huis te Diepenheim, Huis Westerflier, Kasteel Weldam and Havezate Wegdam in and around Diepenheim; some gardens are open to visitors. On the outskirts of Diepenheim, Landgoed Warmelo encompasses a seven-hectare historic garden with a French geometric garden, an English landscape garden and a pinetum. The historic garden of Kasteel Warmelo reflects four centuries of garden architecture – from medieval herb gardens and the formal French geometric garden to the romantic English landscape park. In the English section of the park, which was laid out in the 18th century, an exhibition displays 28 distinctive sand sculptures.

In Diepenheim, the Drawing Centre presents contemporary drawing art through three exhibitions each year, an annual art festival, interactive tours and workshops. The gardens of the Drawing Centre form an outdoor collection in which various artists showcase their views of gardens, nature and the landscape. The garden of Kasteel Weldam also represents historic design: it is an example of the restoration of 17th-century Baroque gardens in the late 19th century. The garden and Landgoed Weldam are open to the public, but the castle itself is not. The estate is also open to walkers and cyclists and has three signposted routes marked with coloured posts.

Mills and history

Goor brings together several different historic sites. The Goor Historical Museum is housed in the 1865 railway station building and presents the history of Goor across two floors. Klompenmuseum Goor has early machines for making wooden shoes and offers demonstrations of traditional handmade wooden-shoe production. It is located near the Braakmolen and offers guided tours and multilingual video presentations in Dutch, French, German and English about wooden-shoe production.

The Braakmolen itself is an octagonal gallery Dutch windmill and stands more than 22 metres tall. During a visit, the millers demonstrate the working mill equipment, except for the motor. The Graftrommel exhibition in Goor is open every first Sunday from April through September, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Den Haller, a water-powered grain mill first mentioned in 1237, stands in Diepenheim.

De Borkeld is an archaeological reserve with settlement remains and burial mounds dating back between 4,000 and 6,000 years. The Salt Museum is located in the former town hall of Ambt en Stad Delden. In the centre of Delden, it tells the story of salt and its importance in all its facets, with a perspective extending from Twickel, Boekelo and Hengelo to the history of salt worldwide.

Nature and country estates

The De Borkeld nature area is easily accessible to walkers and cyclists and includes heathland. At Borkeldweg, Informatieboerderij 'n Witten offers a permanent exhibition, a recognition garden and glacial erratics. Near Delden, Museumboerderij Wendezoele is housed in the monumental Erve Brinkcate near Kasteel Twickel. It offers demonstrations of traditional crafts, exhibitions, guided tours and storytelling.
