Holiday apartment in Bentelo: paths, landscape and special experiences

Bentelo combines its landscape and local history with trails and regional culinary culture. Immediately east of Bentelo, the Hagmolenbeek shapes the landscape. In the surrounding area, characteristic avenues and country roads alternate with irregularly shaped plots, ash trees, woods and hedges. Bentelerheide (Bentelerhaar) lies south of Bentelo and is owned by Stichting Twickel.

Trails through the landscape and woods

“Rondje om en door Bentelo” is a 7.3 km hiking trail. It starts at Café/Restaurant Spoolder Proeven en Proosten in the centre of Bentelo, Onze Lieve Vrouwestraat 2, and from there follows the blue arrows of the hiking trail network. Another hiking trail runs along the Hagmolenbeek. The stream flows between Wijngaard Hof van Twente and a section of woodland belonging to the Twickel estate. The hand-operated Beuzels voetveer was put into service in autumn 2019 to continue the hiking route across the Hagmolenbeek.

Discoveries for different age groups

In Hagmolenbos, the Sprookjespad is designed as a story-led walk with hidden figures and questions for smartphones. The Sprookjespad is approximately 1.5 km long and starts at the car park by the church in Bentelo. The two routes differ in length and support individual route planning. At Kinderspeelboerderij ’t Höfke, there are also indoor and outdoor play facilities.

Church, monument and milling history

The present O.L. Vrouwe van Altijddurende Bijstand church was put into use on 19 August 1954. The three-aisled Neo-Romanesque building was designed by architect Jan van Dongen (1896–1973). The exterior walls contain 26 stained-glass windows designed by Jan Schoenaker, featuring biblical scenes and motifs from Twente. The Short Stirling Monument commemorates the seven-member crew of a British RAF Short Stirling that was shot down by the occupying forces on 28 August. The former “De Hagmolen” grain mill at Bentelosestraat 69 is also part of the local history: the single-storey building, set crosswise and featuring a mansard roof and loading platform, dates from around 1900. The former mill replaced a windmill built in 1860, which in turn had replaced the watermill of the vanished Havezate Hagmolen.

Wine, flowers and seasonal specialities

The first grapevines were planted at Wijngaard Hof van Twente in 2000. The wine-growing business covers more than 5.5 hectares and is spread across three locations. Visitors can book a tour that ends with a wine tasting. Tours of Rik Visschedijk’s flower-growing business are available by appointment. Weather permitting, fresh asparagus is available from Aspergeteler Slaghekke in Bentelo from the end of April until Midsummer Day, 24 June.
