Holiday apartment in Westwoud: waterways, golf and village history

Westwoud is located in West Friesland, surrounded by wide views and an agricultural landscape that is well suited to walking and cycling. The Drachterveld green area lies between Oosterblokker and Westwoud in the surrounding area. When planning a day, Drachterveld with its waterways, cycling and walking paths and Dr. Nuijensstraat with its churches and monuments can be considered separately.

Waterways and paths in Drachterveld

The 22-hectare Drachterveld water storage area can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by boat. The area has a boating route as well as cycling and walking paths. This means that different types of routes converge there, while the water determines your own access to the landscape.

Access is via Wijzenddijkje. Walkers and cyclists can also enter from Oosterblokker through the railway underpass. A boating route also runs near Westwoud from Binnenwijzend via Lutjebroek and Grootebroek to Enkhuizen.

For orientation before a tour, the TOP Westwoud car park is located at Dorpshuis De Schalm, Doctor Nuijensstraat, 1617 KC Westwoud. From TOP Westwoud, the nearest cycle junction is number 83.

Golf with various playing options

The Westfriese Golf Club has a par-71 course for players of all skill levels. The facilities also include a TrackMan® driving range. Those wishing to work on their own game will find a PGA Holland-accredited golf school there offering private lessons, on-course lessons and themed courses.

There is also a specific point of interest away from the game: the brasserie of the Westfriese Golf Club offers a view of the 18th hole from its terrace and also welcomes non-golfers.

Churches and historic architecture

A Dutch Reformed church stands at Dr. Nuijensstraat 24. It was built in 1875 to a design by architect A.T. van Wijngaarden. It is considered a rare surviving, authentic example of an eclectic church from the third quarter of the 19th century.

A three-aisled cruciform church stands at Dr. Nuijensstraat 78. It was designed by Th. Molkenboer in 1849. Its richly decorated interior includes Neo-Baroque altars and images of saints. The church also has an organ made by L. Ypma in 1863.

Village history on Dr. Nuijensstraat

The Banpaal at Dr. Nuijensstraat 128 and the stolp farm at Dr. Nuijensstraat 22 stand on the same street. The Banpaal is a stone boundary post topped with a lion and bearing the year 1754. The stolp farm is a largely intact example of rural architecture from the late 19th century.

At Heidens Kerkhof, on the corner of Noorderboekertweg and Oudijk in Westwoud, stood Westwoud’s oldest church, the Heidens Kerkje, until 1876. Westwoud has 12 Rijksmonumenten.
