Venhuizen offers an unusual mix of cycling paths, the IJsselmeer dike, regional architectural history and lively traditions for planning your trip. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Venhuizen, you can therefore tailor your stay to different interests: active cycling, exploring the village’s cultural history or enjoying water- and family-oriented experiences at TuinGoed Bonatèr.

Cycling routes between the village and the IJsselmeer

The handcycle route through Venhuizen runs along quiet side roads with ribbon development consisting of small houses and Stolpboerderijen. It also crosses the wide dike along the IJsselmeer; the entire route is paved. Another cycling route is 31 kilometres long. It starts in Enkhuizen, follows side roads through Lutjebroek and Westwoud to Venhuizen, and then returns to Enkhuizen via the Zuiderdijk along the IJsselmeer. The different route lengths make it easier to plan either a shorter outing or a longer bike ride.

A stay by the water can also include various beaches: there are several beaches about 500 metres from the dike. The exact distance should be understood as an approximate figure. This means that cycling routes, the dike landscape and time by the water can be considered different focal points when planning your trip.

Historic sites and regional culture

The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk in Venhuizen dates from the 15th century. It is a single-nave cruciform church with a five-sided closed choir. At the Overhaal near Westerbuurt 34, there are two wooden winches with associated brick paths and wooden slipways leading into the ditches that run parallel to the road.

The houses also tell the story of regional architectural history. De Buurt 1 in Venhuizen is a Stolphoeve dating from 1773, with a carved door and carved fanlight, six- and nine-pane windows, and a decorative masonry chimney. Swanenplaats at De Buurt 11 is a Stolpboerderij of the West Frisian type. Its core is older, while the façades largely date from the third quarter of the 19th century. Inside, Swanenplaats also preserves an old Smuiger from the 18th century.

At Koggehuis on Westeinde 3, historical photographs are accessible through an image database and objects through an object database. In the library, anyone can search by author, title and keyword. This means Venhuizen also offers points of interest for visitors who want to discover local history not only through buildings, but also through images, objects and books.

Traditions, events and a special farm

The Harddraverij in Venhuizen is a 300-metre short-distance horse race held in the centre of the village. The Harddraverijvereniging Venhuizen has organised the race since 1960 on Pinkster drie, the third day of Pentecost. In April 2021, Harddraverij Venhuizen/Pinkster 3 was included in the Dutch Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Since its foundation in 1975, Cultureel Centrum De Triangel has organised concerts, exhibitions, children’s performances, theatre and films. From 9 June 2026, the Zuiderkogge church community will take over the cultural activities of Cultureel Centrum De Triangel.

TuinGoed Bonatèr is a young organic nursery in the West Frisian village of Venhuizen, near the IJsselmeer dike between Hoorn and Enkhuizen. The business includes a farm shop selling agricultural produce. TuinGoed Bonatèr also offers a play area, pedal boats, a whisper boat and ponies. Visitors can fly kites, fish and enjoy water sports there. This gives you various ideas for day trips when choosing a holiday apartment in Venhuizen, without having to limit yourself to just one type of holiday.
