Discover Langeweg: Monastery, Patersbos and Toeterfeest

Langeweg combines an annual music event with an agriculturally oriented village character and remarkable traces of its monastic history. The Toeterfeest takes place in Langeweg every year, featuring various wind orchestras competing musically against one another. At the same time, the village is surrounded by agricultural land used for arable farming and horticulture. Village centre, fields and paths through the landscape

Langeweg is located along the N285 provincial road, which is called De Langeweg and runs from Zevenbergsehoek to Zevenbergen. In the village centre, the old monastery grounds, with their large old trees, continue to shape the character of the village. From the town centre, the Hamseweg leads to the Polder Oudland van Zevenbergen to the north.

A particular focus is placed on the buildings of the former monastery area. The former Mariaschool and the adjacent convent house of the Franciscanes van Veghel order in Langeweg were built in 1913. The former Mariaschool is characterised by classical motifs and has cultural and historical value as an expression of spiritual development. The former convent house was also built in 1913 and was later used as a teacher's residence.

Above a keystone in the door frame of the former convent house is a niche containing a statue of Mary, the patron saint of the monastery. The church in the former Capuchin monastery is a single-nave building in the Neo-Romanesque style, with a nave, an apse and a Marian chapel. Huize Roville also adds to the architectural character: the house is designed in the Neoclassical style and features distinctive oval ox-eye windows, French œils-de-bœuf, which are considered very unique in the clay region of West Brabant. Huize Roville is regarded as a presumed former buitenplaats at the corner of Zuiddijk and Pootweg.

Another notable residence is a house designed in 1938 by the Tilburg architect Jos. Bedaux for the family of the timber merchant P. Aarden in Langeweg. It is one of his earliest works and is considered a special and unique example in the north-western Brabant region.

Patersbos and a historic walking route

Behind the monastery lies the former monastery garden, popularly known as Patersbos. Patersbos is open to all visitors during the opening hours of the Emmaus-Kringloopwinkel: on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by arrangement. The Emmaus-Kringloopwinkel is located in the outbuildings of the former Capuchin monastery. Around ten small shops surrounding a landscaped courtyard with a catering terrace offer various second-hand items.

The walking route “A Day in the Life of a Capuchin” starts at the entrance to the Emmaus-Kringloopwinkel and leads across the monastery grounds and through Patersbos. This allows architecture, local history and a path through the former monastery garden to be combined in a single outing. When choosing accommodation in Langeweg, you can therefore orient your stay more towards music and architectural heritage, or towards the landscape, garden area and walking.
