Holiday apartment in Klundert: Fortress history and watery landscapes

Klundert combines fortress history with a landscape shaped by water. As a fortified town, it was part of the Stelling van Willemstad during the Eighty Years’ War against the Spanish, and thus also part of the Zuiderwaterlinie. Marine clay polders, the remains of tidal creeks and waterways are reminders of the centuries-long struggle against the water. The polders, creeks and waterways are not merely a backdrop; they are visible traces of this long confrontation.

Fortifications, bridge and distinctive buildings

On the north side of Klundert, large sections of the main rampart, moat and counterscarp with covered way have been restored to their original condition. You will find a precise architectural detail where the Bottekreek cuts through the rampart on the north side near Verlaatstraat: a yellow brick bridge stands here, with the year 1769 inscribed on its keystone.

The fortifications include the Stenen Poppen, a brick-built dam dating from 1583. There is also a picnic area at the Stenen Poppen, with views of the water and the Poppen.

The town hall also tells the story of Klundert’s past. It was built in 1621 in the Renaissance style, based on a design by Melchior van Herbach and thanks to a substantial contribution from Prince Maurits. The Johannes de Doperkerk is a late Neo-Gothic brick cruciform church with a tower dating from 1924. The Jewish cemetery, associated with Klundert’s Jewish community, is located on Blauwhoefseweg. This community was dissolved again around 1900 because of the small number of Jewish residents. The buildings represent different historical periods: the town hall belongs to the Renaissance, the Johannes de Doperkerk to the late Neo-Gothic period, and the cemetery to the history of the Jewish community.

The Nationaal Vlasserij-Suikermuseum in Klundert focuses on life and work in flax cultivation, sugar beet cultivation and sugar factories. The museum is housed in a restored estate farm. Two large exhibition rooms are named “Vlasserij” and “Suiker”.

On hiking stage 4 of the Zuiderwaterlinie, walkers continue from Klundert to Zevenbergen. Another option is the approximately 3-kilometre route through the fortified town. The booklet “Kuieren door Klundert” includes a town map and detailed information about the sights. The Stenen Poppen, the old town hall and the Bottekreek can all be reached within a few minutes on foot from the spacious car park behind the Tourist Information Point at Oosterstraat 20 in Klundert.
