The Dorpskerk Fijnaart was built in 1876 in a traditional craft style with eclectic and Romanesque Revival elements. Its tower spire was rebuilt in 1948–1949 after wartime damage. Construction of the round stone windmill De Oude Molen began in 1845; it is the last example of a round stone wind-powered grain mill in the West Brabant clay-polder region. The dates help place the buildings in chronological context: construction of the windmill began in 1845, followed by construction of the church in 1876.

Events, windmill and leisure

The Fendertse feestweek takes place in Fijnaart every year. Graanpop is an annual music event in Fijnaart. A weekly market is held in Fijnaart on Tuesday mornings. The weekly market takes place on Tuesday mornings; the Fendertse feestweek and Graanpop return every year.

The windmill and the De Oude Molen mill shop can be visited on Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00 when the mill is operating, or by appointment; a visit is also possible on Wednesdays when the door is open. Since its restoration from 2001 to 2008, the grain mill in Oude Molen near Fijnaart has been turning several times a week. At the De Oester swimming pool, visitors can enjoy recreational swimming and lane swimming. The Fendertse Week programme includes, among other things, a beer festival, funfair, street market, live music and activities for different age groups. When planning a visit to the windmill, it is therefore important to distinguish between the fixed Saturday opening, visits by appointment and the possible Wednesday visit. De Oester complements the windmill history with recreational swimming and lane swimming as a separate activity.

Regional products and local delights

Regional products also give Fijnaart its own theme for visitors. De Oude Molen’s shop sells freshly milled flour as well as bread and cake mixes. Since 1964, the Roks fruit farm has grown cherries, plums, apples and pears; regular family events are held in the adjacent orchard. The Streekwinkel Bakkerij Strootman sells fresh bread, traditionally made worstenbrood, pancakes and pastries.

At Brouwerij De Toekomst, beer is brewed in limited editions without committing to a specific beer style. Drinkers can influence the recipe or beer style themselves. Streekwinkel De Torenpolderkaas offers cheese-making workshops. Streekwinkel De Torenpolderkaas also sells farmhouse cheese made from the milk of its own cows. The AWF farm shop stocks seasonal products such as asparagus, summer fruit, farmhouse cheese and fresh free-range eggs. In the wider area, it is known as a source of fresh strawberries and high-quality clay-soil potatoes. At De Toekomst, the recipe and beer style are explicitly subject to influence by the drinkers. AWF’s range is seasonal and includes asparagus, summer fruit, farmhouse cheese and fresh free-range eggs.
