Several types of landscape give Cranendonck different character. Buulderbroek has been designated a “Natte Natuurparel” by the province and contains valuable, or potentially valuable, groundwater-dependent natural areas, as well as habitats for birds and insects. The Cranendonckse Bos includes water-rich areas and marshes and is easily accessible thanks to its characteristic corduroy bridges. The Pan nature area lies northeast of Maarheeze and covers approximately 300 hectares. On its southern side, deciduous and mixed forests alternate with a section of untouched heathland and small marsh areas. In the Netherlands, the KempenBroek Mens & Biosphere Area includes, among other places, Cranendonck, Weert and Nederweert.

Routes

For mountain biking, Cranendonck has two signposted mountain bike routes with a total length of 60 kilometres. The starting board is located at the Baronie at Cranendonck 1 in Soerendonk. The approximately 44-kilometre Smokkelroute follows the cycle junction network and can be ridden in both directions; it runs through the Dutch-Belgian border region between the Achelse Kluis and Budel. On the 40-kilometre Teuten Tocht cycling experience route, you can learn about the history of the Teuten, historic itinerant traders. The Molenroute Cranendonck runs past Cranendonck’s remaining windmills.

Shorter routes also combine exercise with landscapes and local history. “Rondje Baronie & Cranendoncks Bos” is an approximately 5-kilometre junction-network walking route through the Baronie of Cranendonck and the surrounding countryside. The Brinkenwandeling in Soerendonk is a 6-kilometre interactive route that can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The surroundings and the visible contours of the foundations of the former Cranendonck Castle are also suitable for a walk or as a stopover during a cycling tour.

Culture

History is evident in Cranendonck not only in museums. Open Monumentendag Cranendonck takes place every year on the second full weekend of September. During this event, selected monuments in the municipality are opened to the public with various themed activities. At the former Cranendonck Castle, visible contours in the terrain mark the foundations. At the Smokkel- en Grensmuseum Cranendonck, visitors can learn about smuggling in the border region; the museum also offers a 20-minute film about the local history of smuggling.

Budel-Dorplein has protected village ensemble status because of its numerous monuments. The former industrial village has significant cultural and historical value. Its sights include “'t Prisonneke”, a miniature prison, and the renovated Cantinetheater. The historic village setting also contains “Het Kerkje”, a Protestant church from 1812, and the “Schepenhuis”, an old town hall from 1772.

Nature Experiences

Some places showcase the landscape in a particularly vivid way. De Immenhof is a freely accessible bee and flower garden that is open at all times. The Belevingstuin of IVN Cranendonck is designed as a sensory garden with a barefoot path, play elements for children and a bee hotel. “Beleef Budel met Ridder Kuno” takes visitors through Budel on a 3-kilometre interactive walk and can be experienced via an app or QR codes on a smartphone.

The “Hou it Moi” birdwatching hut is located along the route through Soerendonks Goor. From there, visitors can observe water and birds without disturbing them. This makes the site a place where the route meets a quiet view of the surroundings, while the various paths in Cranendonck each take in their own elements of landscape and history.

Regional Products

Regional produce is also part of the character of the municipality. The blueberry drink “'t Smokkelaartje” from Fruitbedrijf Jan Janssen is available, among other places, at the streekproductenwinkel at Bergbosweg 17 in Budel and at VVV Cranendonck. The “Janzona” mill is a whisky outlet and also a distillery. The regional products listed for Soerendonk include a vineyard and a special tea plantation.
