Elsloo combines a protected historic townscape with old streets leading to the Maas, green spaces and several different routes through history and the landscape. Along narrow cobblestone-paved streets stand Maasland houses with decorative brick bands, hardstone window surrounds or half-timbering. Old streets lead to the Maas, while Elsloo’s original medieval castle now lies in the bed of the Maas.

History and landscape around Elsloo

The Historiehuis van de Maasvallei offers an accessible way to explore the region’s past. There you can visit the Streekmuseum, a 1950s kitchen, a nostalgic village shop, old houses and the information and knowledge centre of the Maasvallei. The Historiehuis is also an official information centre for the recognised Rivierpark Maasvallei landscape park and sells cycling and walking maps for the area. This allows you to combine cultural impressions with the information needed to find your way during an active day.

Next to the tower of Kasteel Elsloo lies the botanical garden of IVN Elsloo. The grounds cover approximately one hectare and include numerous themed gardens as well as a new arboretum. Kasteelpark Elsloo offers a different landscape impression, transitioning southwards into the Bunderbos. The Kasteelpark can be explored via a network of walking paths. In Elsloo, gardens, connections with the forest and historic sites thus come together.

Holiday apartment in Elsloo for cultural and route-focused days

Several routes give your stay different focal points. The poetry route around Elsloo is approximately 6.5 km long. It was created based on an idea by Jack Jacobs and combines his poems, inspired by the area’s historical diversity and nature, with a walk through the surroundings. In the activity “De Sleutel van Elsloo”, participants solve five tasks. These lead to the code for a safe containing the key to Elsloo; they can then see the key with their own eyes and hold it in their hands.

Another option is the 9 km route marked with blue posts. It leads to Kasteel Elsloo, De Fontein brewery, the Streekmuseum Elsloo (Schipperbeurs), the historic centre of Elsloo and the ruins of Stein. The different route lengths and content help you organise your days according to your interests and the time available: one day with poetry and nature, another with several historical and regional stops.

Orientation for your stay

From Beek-Elsloo railway and bus station, you can reach the old town centre on foot in approximately 30 minutes. For exploring the local sites, FARO’s free, ad-free Erfgoedapp provides short texts, old postcards, narrated stories and videos about the surrounding area. It also offers notifications near the monuments described.
