Holiday apartment in Sittard-Geleen: Hiking, culture and cycling routes

Sittard-Geleen combines varied trails, historic sites and green landscapes within a compact narrative setting. Between city parks, listed buildings, castles and cross-border cycling routes, a diverse picture emerges of the municipality and its wider surroundings.

Hiking

One clearly named hiking route is the “Rondje Oud-Geleen”, which is 8.6 kilometres long. It passes listed buildings and follows the hiking junction network. Another hiking route near the Pater Karel Chapel is approximately 9 kilometres long and is marked mostly with yellow posts. The “Van stadspark naar stadspark” route passes the Pater Karel Chapel in Munstergeleen in the municipality of Sittard-Geleen and runs through urban areas, parks and green landscapes.

The landscape itself is also part of the hiking experience in Sittard-Geleen: numerous forests are used for hiking. The landscape also includes numerous parks and urban gardens, which likewise contribute to the hiking experience. At Pater Karel’s birthplace beside the Geleenbeek, a barn was converted into the Pater Karel Chapel in 1954. There is a museum and a shop selling religious articles at the site.

Culture and history

At the Het Nieuwe Domein museum in Sittard-Geleen, art, cultural heritage and contemporary life come together. Het Nieuwe Domein conveys stories from the city and region through exhibitions, programmes and projects. The building itself was constructed in 1863 as a school building with a teacher’s residence.

At Kasteel Limbricht, a guided tour leads through an underground vaulted cellar of the main castle dating from the 11th century. The tour also includes a visit to the small museum in the castle’s dungeon. Another historic setting is The Old Salvius Church. It serves as a venue for concerts, guided tours and exhibitions and is part of Visit Zuid-Limburg’s “Route vol Verwondering Noord-lus”. It is also considered one of the hundred most valuable monuments in the Netherlands.

The Route des Vins Sittard includes a tasting of a local wine at Wijngaard Fort Sanderbout.

Sittard-Geleen’s event calendar includes the St. Joep Market, which is one of the major events in the municipality.

Nature

Kasteelpark Born is a zoo in the gardens of the former Kasteel Born. In addition to the terrace, the park has a large playground.
