Schinveld between forest, water and the past

Schinveld stands for experiencing nature, regional history and active days out. The Schinveldse Bossen are the largest contiguous forest area in South Limburg and are also part of the cross-border Heidenatuurpark. Across 308 hectares, forest, grassland and stream valleys come together to form a natural area.

Schinveldse Bossen and Dal van de Roode Beek

The Schinveldse Bossen are also an important source area for Limburg's drinking water. Various birds of prey breed there; mammals found in the area include foxes, pine martens, stone martens and roe deer. The open Es lies between Schinveld and the forest. From there, unobstructed views extend to the edge of the forest, with herb-rich grasslands where the rare old cattle breed Heidekoe can be found.

In the Dal van de Roode Beek, you can take an international hike. Visitors have free access to the area. An artificial hill features a lake designed as a work of art; the artificial hill offers panoramic views over the stream valley.

The entire site is accessible to wheelchair users and has an accessible toilet.

Nonke Buusjke welcomes visitors on Sundays from Easter Monday through October, from 12:00 to 17:00. Visits from Monday to Saturday can be booked online for groups of 15 or more. The Sunday time slot from 12:00 to 17:00 can be incorporated into the day's itinerary as a clearly defined visiting period. A wooden bridge in the Schinveldse Bossen leads to Lammendam Schans, the historic remains of a fortified settlement surrounded by a moat.

The town's history also includes a pilgrimage tradition: historically, numerous pilgrims, especially from the German border region, came to Schinveld to seek healing for their ailments through the intercession of Saint Eligius, also known as St.-Loeë. During glider flights operated by ELZC, a winch launch is the most commonly used launch method. The duration remains variable when planning the day, as the subsequent glider flight lasts 6 to 15 minutes depending on weather conditions.
