Culture in the centre of Heythuysen

The late Gothic Sint Nicolaaskerk was built after 1504 as a three-aisled hall church. The vaults in the choir and central aisle feature decorative paintings dating from 1507. The Missiekapel complements this historic setting: it was built in 1850 or 1851 and stands in the centre of Heythuysen next to the church.

The chapel combines historic substance with a current cultural use. It is currently used under the name “Kunsttempel Leudal” as an exhibition space for performance art. Anyone interested in the transformation of sacred spaces, architecture and contemporary art will find an unusual interplay of different eras here within the village.

Leudal and places in the countryside

The Leudal nature area is located in the immediate surroundings of Heythuysen, between Heythuysen and Neer. South of the village lies De Beylshof on the Tungelroyse Beek. Hiking and cycling at different paces

The 6 km hiking route “Knopenlopen: Heythuysen Langs Cultuur en grafheuvels” starts at the former town hall in the centre of Heythuysen, leads through the south and southeast of the village, and returns to the starting point. The route thus combines culture and burial mounds over a manageable distance. During the summer months, the side entrance of the Sint Nicolaaskerk is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00.

For longer days by bicycle, two routes of different lengths are the main options. The 37.5 km cycling route “Heythuyser” passes through Heythuysen, Leveroy, Baexem and Horn, as well as through the Leudal nature area. The 35 km route “De Rijke Historie van Leudal” starts in Heythuysen at the Sint Nicolaaskerk, passes the Missiekapel and returns to Heythuysen via the Grafheuvels. The different route lengths make it easier to plan either a relatively compact or a more extensive active day.

Art, a mill and a regional break

The artwork “De Eiffeltoren in de Dorpstraat” has adorned the streetscape in Dorpstraat since July 2023. Including its Corten steel base, it is 2.5 metres high. Another striking cultural landmark is the Sint Antoniusmolen, a grain mill dating from 1861. It is a typical post mill and was built on an artificially created hill.

On the edge of the Leudal, the Boscafé De Busjop is located in Heythuysen. It is a starting point for hiking and cycling routes; after a walk, visitors can enjoy various dishes there.
