Holiday apartment in Neer: village history, Ommetje and the Meuse

Village history with unusual details

The present-day Friedesse Molen was built in 1717. Another historic trace leads to the former Premonstratensian monastery of Keizersbosch. The rectangular building from the mid-18th century has a carriage gate and a coat-of-arms stone; today, it serves as a farmhouse.

The O.L. Vrouwekapel is also richly detailed. The building, closed on three sides, has a roof turret above the front façade and a date stone from 1711. A crucifix is mounted on the outside of the chancel apse. The bell frame contains a bell cast in 1761 by Alexius and Petrus Petit, with a diameter of 26 centimetres.

The architectural details of the O.L. Vrouwekapel are spread across the front façade, chancel apse and bell frame. On the Ommetje, buildings and traces of former paths come together as distinct stops. The crossing of the Meuse adds to the waterways, while Neer's 150-year brewing tradition provides a local focus on craftsmanship.

Stream, flooding and historic paths

The Neerbeek has fish ladders. The Kwir stream near Neer was formed by the Peelrand Fault. The landscape also includes the Eiland area, which becomes an island during high water.

The Historic Ommetje through Neer

The Historic Ommetje starts at the car park behind the monumental Sint-Martinuskerk in Neer. Along the way, the route passes the disused Hammermolen on the Neerbeek. In this way, the route connects the car park, the historic mill site and the course of the stream.

The Historic Ommetje also takes you past the monumental residence known as “Maxe-Grete”. At the “Naerse Sjans”, residents of Neer took refuge from robbers and looters in the Middle Ages. At junction 40, the course of an old Roman road can still be seen; a little farther on, it crossed the stream at a ford. For a walk with several specific points of interest, the route therefore offers plenty of reason to look more closely.

Crossing the Meuse and Neer's brewing tradition

The “De Vogelvlucht” ferry carries cyclists and pedestrians across the Meuse between Neer and Rijkel/Beesel.
