Koningsbosch combines architectural history, a historic circular walking route and a landscape in which agricultural areas alternate with small woodland areas. The convent of the Sisters of Charity of the Most Precious Blood was built in several phases between 1874 and 1912. The present O.L. Vrouw Onbevlekt Ontvangen Church was built in 1925–1926 to plans by J. Stuyt and replaced the neo-Gothic predecessor church built by P. Cuypers between 1864 and 1866. Church, War Memorial and Mariakapel

The O.L. Vrouw Onbevlekt Ontvangen Church is a three-aisled cruciform church with a closed choir, porch and a laterally positioned tower with a four-sided spire. Another historic building on the edge of Koningsbosch is the Mariakapel Koningsbosch. The small brick roadside chapel dates from the 19th century and is also known as the “Kapel van de Genezing”. The Koningsbosch war memorial commemorates 32 fellow citizens who lost their lives in Koningsbosch and the surrounding area during the Second World War. It stands on the north side of the cemetery on the Prinsenbaan in Koningsbosch, in the municipality of Echt-Susteren.

Historic Routes through Koningsbosch

The Prinsenbaan running through Koningsbosch was originally part of the Roman military road between Heerlen and Xanten, specifically the Mederiacum (Melick)–Teudurum (Tüddern) section. The historic circular walking route “Ommetje historisch Koningsbosch” provides direct access to the history of the village. It is 5.5 km long and starts at the car park on Kapelaan Verdonschotstraat. At junction 26, the route passes the Mariakapel, allowing the landscape and historic buildings to be combined on a manageable circuit.

Hiking Options from St. Gottharduskerk

For longer hiking plans, St. Gottharduskerk serves as a starting point. From there, hikers can reach Spaanshuisken via junctions 27 and 29. From junction 81, various routes can be taken back to the starting point. This makes it possible to plan the hike differently from the 5.5-kilometre historic circuit. Different route lengths and paths can therefore play a role in your planning, without restricting you to just one fixed circuit.

Het Haeselaar is one of the relatively large nature areas between Koningsbosch and the rest of the Netherlands.
