Holiday apartment in Echt: Discover history, culture and nature
A holiday apartment in Echt takes you to a place with a long history: Echt has been continuously inhabited since Roman times and was first mentioned in writing in 950, at that time as Ehti or Ettha. From the 13th century onward, Echt developed into a town with town walls, gates and moats. These key points provide a clear historical framework for exploring the town.
Holiday apartment in Echt between history and culture
The cultural and historical character of the town also includes the Karmelietessenklooster convent and its garden behind it. The complex is significant as a distinctive expression of the development of the Roman Catholic Church in the last quarter of the 19th century, in terms of its use and external appearance. The convent is also associated with the memory of Edith Stein: she stayed there from 1938 to 1942.
In the town centre, the Museum van de Vrouw is located next to the Sint-Landricuskerk. It is dedicated to women and their lives and is unique in the Netherlands. The permanent Wonderkabinet presents a selection from the collection as well as the history of today’s municipality of Echt-Susteren. The museum is fully accessible to electric wheelchairs and walking frames. Echt is also home to the Cultuurhuis Edith Stein, housed in a historic building constructed in 1887–1888 as a town hall, public primary school and teachers’ residence.
The Sint-Landricuskerk itself is a late Gothic, three-aisled brick hall church with a single-aisled choir dating from the 15th century. It was officially elevated to a pilgrimage site for Saint Edith Stein. The church displays the choir mantle worn by Edith Stein during her stay at the Karmelietessenklooster convent.
Hiking trails and the De Doort natural area
For days spent in nature, there is De Doort, a nature reserve between Echt and Susteren featuring forests, meadows, ponds and wetlands. It is home to one of the largest populations of the rare European tree frog. The ponds are remnants of former clay-mining activities; the largest bodies of water on the northern side are old clay pits excavated in the 1950s for the De Valk roof-tile factory in Echt.
The hiking route network in the municipality of Echt-Susteren comprises 270 km of signposted trails marked in both directions, 254 junctions and 11 starting points with information boards and parking facilities. The starting points include Echt railway station and VVV-Echt. The various starting points and junctions give your route planning a clear structure.
The Historische Dakpannenwandeling Echt offers a 0.8 km urban walk and an extended 7.8 km route through De Doort. It passes through the industrial heritage of De Valk, once one of the largest roof-tile factories in the Netherlands. The Doort-Taterbosch hiking route combines a 6.5 km loop through Doort with a 6.3 km loop through Taterbosch, forming a total route of 11.6 km. The trails run along forest paths and through meadows; in wet weather, some sections follow a muddy woodland path.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Echt, you can plan around these different themes: local history and culture within short distances, or longer routes through the landscape and nature. The different route lengths help you tailor the planned scope of your day between exploring the town, De Doort and Taterbosch.
