Churches and chapels

The lower part of the tower of the H. Cosmas en Damianus Kerk in Afferden probably dates from the 12th century. The old Gothic church was built around 1500. The Kapel van O.L.V. van Smarten (Mariakapel) also has a rich history: it was built as a small chapel in 1612 and attracted pilgrims from places outside Afferden.

The larger Kapel van O.L.V. van Smarten (Mariakapel) was added in 1909 and is directly connected to the original chapel. It was built in the Neo-Romanesque style and extensively restored in 1983. The Boskapel / Poaterskapel was built in 1886 on the initiative of French nuns who had found refuge at Bleijenbeek Castle. In good weather, a Mother's Day celebration traditionally still takes place at the Poaterskapel every year.
