Holiday apartment in Wijchen: nature, culture and paths by the water

Wijchen combines diverse landscapes with a richly narrated history and numerous paths through the surrounding area. The municipality encompasses open agricultural areas, river dunes, forests and wetlands. At the same time, Wijchen lies south of the Maas on a sandy ridge. Between nature, historical sites, museums and special routes, this creates a multifaceted picture of the area.

Landscape

The water-rich character of the surrounding area is evident at Hernense Ven: the area is rich in fish, numerous dragonfly species, special aquatic plants and amphibians. Wijchens ven is designated as a nature reserve; Galloway cattle also live there. The Berendonck recreational area is another distinctive landscape. It features broad sandy beaches, large sunbathing lawns and plenty of greenery. Visitors with a disabled parking permit can use wheelchair-accessible entrance gates and parking spaces there.

Culture and history

Wijchen Castle is located in the centre of Wijchen and, in addition to serving as the town hall, also functions as a museum and wedding venue. Its history dates back to 1609, when Emilia, the daughter of Prince Willem van Oranje, acquired the castle. The Museum Wijchen Castle presents 6,000 years of settlement history through an archaeological collection – from the Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages.

The museum also includes the “De Tuun” museum garden. It displays plants that were cultivated from the late Iron Age through the Middle Ages. Visitors can see, touch and smell them. The museum offers guided tours, workshops for adults and children, lectures, family activities and treasure hunts for children through the castle and museum.

There are also remarkable historical sites outside the centre. Hernen Castle has unique covered defensive walkways from the Middle Ages. There is a presentation about the vanished tower and a tour with a “talking” lantern. The Batenburg castle ruins can be visited from April to September on set days and by appointment during this period. The Banmolen mill originally dates from 1531 and is historically closely connected with the Lordship of Batenburg. The Klooster Tienakker monument tells the story of the Tienakker Sisters, who were connected with the German Wehrmacht, patients of the Sint Jozefgesticht and refugees from Nijmegen.

Paths and routes

Several signposted paths provide access to the landscape and local history. The 2.6-kilometre Wijchens ven walking route has accessible paths for wheelchair users, pushchairs and other mobility aids. The Leemweg walking route starts at Urnenveldweg in Wijchen and is signposted with direction signs and/or posts. Over a distance of 5 kilometres, it leads across the Valendriese Heuvels and through the surrounding natural landscape near Nijmegen.

The “Walking in Wijchen” route is a historical walk through Wijchen and its surroundings. It provides information about the history of Wijchen and leads to interesting sites. Columns along the route briefly explain the historical significance of each stop. The “Ommetje Wijchen 5” runs for 5 kilometres through the centre of Wijchen and combines art and history. Orange stickers on lampposts and posts mark the route.

The Landgoed Hernen walking route leads through forests and past a medieval castle that can be visited with a guide. For longer explorations, there is the 48-kilometre Fietsroute langs Wijchense Oorlogsherinneringen. It leads to various historical sites in Wijchen and the surrounding area. The “Kunstgeheimen Wijchen & Beuningen” route runs between the Waal and Maas rivers and leads to special art objects by the water.

Recreation

Thermen Berendonck is a wellness resort in Wijchen with pools and an extensive Moroccan-style sauna area. Its facilities include an outdoor pool overlooking the water and outdoor whirlpools. Thermen Berendonck also offers wellness days with sauna, spa and wellness treatments. The distance between Nijmegen and Wijchen railway station is 10 minutes.
