Twello combines village history with historic architectural forms and traces of craftsmanship. The chapel of Twello’s Dorpskerk was elevated to parish church status in 1298. The religious building and the oldest village building belong to different historical traces in the village.

Historical traces around Huis Duistervoorde in Twello: castle, moat and monastic use

Huis Duistervoorde is located on the edge of Twello. A castle with a double moat was built there in the late Middle Ages. Around 1350, the house began as a medieval small castle. For a long time, it was used as a monastery. Around 1864, Huis Duistervoorde acquired its present form. The moat complex belongs to the early history of the house, while its monastic use and present appearance belong to later periods.

De Klok and Havekes Mölle: oldest village building and only surviving wind-powered grain mill

De Klok is Twello’s oldest village building. Havekes Mölle is Twello’s only surviving wind-powered grain mill. It was built in 1898 on behalf of the Havekes family. The name of the commissioning family is thus also reflected in the name of the mill. Havekes Mölle is open to visitors every Saturday; this fixed day of the week provides a specific reference for planning a stay.

Route, landscape and memorial plaque in Twello’s Spiegelbosje

The Monumentaal rondje Twello route follows the old course of the medieval Doornweerdstraat and leads to the protected Duistervoorde villagescape. In addition, the contours of the Hackforts Veenhuis estate are visible in old avenue structures, orchards and hedgerows that shape the landscape. A memorial plaque for Jacob van Spiegel has stood in the Spiegelbosje since 1993. Walkers interested in history can observe not only the villagescape along the route, but also avenue structures, orchards and hedgerows as landscape features.

Craftsmanship and cultural events: clog making and Kunstkring Voorst

The clog-making workshop at Stoomhoutzagerij Wilpsche Dijk has existed since 1867. Clog making is designated as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage. At Stoomhoutzagerij Wilpsche Dijk, wooden shoes are made from poplar and willow wood. Both machine-based and traditional manual work are used. The focus of the craft therefore lies both on the types of wood used and on the two production methods.

Plan cultural events in Twello by date: writers’ café, music and exhibitions

Kunstkring Voorst hosts a writers’ café on the third Friday of every month and music on the first Saturday of every month. Kunstkring Voorst also organizes changing exhibitions by members and guest artists. On the first Saturday of the month, the music event and the Saturday opening of Havekes Mölle can be assigned to the same day of the week. The writers’ café, by contrast, takes place on the third Friday. This provides specific weekly and monthly reference points for planning time in Twello, while the changing exhibitions form a separate cultural event.
