Terwolde combines trails through the surrounding countryside with historic architecture, proximity to the IJssel and regional specialities. Between the culturally and historically significant polder area of Nijbroek and Terwolde, old drainage structures and striking buildings, you will find a variety of opportunities for an enjoyable stay. A holiday apartment in Terwolde is a suitable option if you would like to combine nature, culture and culinary discoveries in your daily itinerary.

Hiking trails and cycling routes around Terwolde

The 11-kilometre Tuylermarkerpad starts at Molenweg 2 in Terwolde, near the Cosmas and Damian Church. The trail is marked in both directions with a blue clog symbol and can be walked clockwise or counterclockwise. The approximately 7-kilometre Woldermarkerpad circular trail also starts at the Cosmas and Damian Church on Molenweg. It is marked with a red clog symbol, likewise in both directions; here too, you can walk clockwise or counterclockwise. The different lengths and markings make it easier to find your way when planning an active day.

The Woldermarkerpad and the Avervoorderpad pass through the countryside around De Vecht, Teuge and Terwolde. For cycling, there is also the “Fietsen langs IJsselhoeven en Spiekers” route. It starts at the Cosmas and Damian Church, follows the Terwoldse Bandijk roughly towards the northern part of Nijbroek, and returns via the village of Nijbroek and De Vecht to the church. This allows you to explore the landscape and villages in the surrounding area in different ways.

Church, mill and historic estates

The Dorpskerk Terwolde stands in a place steeped in history: as early as the 13th century, a small church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian stood here. Around 1400 and 1540, it was converted into the present-day building. The church contains wall paintings by Ewolt van Delft dating from around 1540. The wall painting of Saint Cunera is considered unique in this region and adds to the building’s art-historical significance.

Landgoed Matanze also offers several historical points of interest. The estate dates from the 17th century and includes a main building, a coach house, a tea house, monumental greenhouses and a former servants’ house. Landgoed Matanze and the garden house are Rijksmonumenten, meaning officially protected monuments in the Netherlands. The Korenmolen De Ooievaar was rebuilt after fires in 1893, 1973 and 2015 and is once again fully operational. Guided tours of the mill are offered by a miller.

IJssel, cider and regional specialities

The IESSEL Cider tasting room is located directly on the IJssel at Bandijk 25, 7396 NB Terwolde. IESSEL Cider offers bookable tastings that include a visit to the cider mill, explanations of the cider-making process and the opportunity to sample several ciders. Another regional speciality is the Molenwinkel shop at Korenmolen De Ooievaar. It sells baking mixes whose varieties may vary depending on the season.

Historic water management in the polder area

In the culturally and historically significant polder area between Nijbroek and Terwolde, old structures relating to drainage and land reclamation planning are still visible. The history of Gemaal Terwolde fits into this context: it began in 1913 with the commission to build a steam pumping station on the Bandijk in Terwolde. The mr. A.C. baron Van der Feltzgemaal has been a municipal monument for several years. When choosing a holiday apartment in Terwolde, you can take these different points of interest into account: marked hiking trails and a described cycling route for active days, church and mill history for cultural interests, and the IJssel, cider and polder landscape for more leisurely discoveries suited to different preferences.

You can find other places in the wider area under Voorst, Nijbroek, Twello, Teuge and Klarenbeek.
