Varik combines history, river landscape and trails for a varied stay. The Dikke Toren stands out in the village landscape as the best-known surviving part of Varik’s medieval church. The tower dates from around 1300, is approximately 35 metres high and offers wide-ranging views from the gallery. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Varik can combine culture, water and activity according to their preferred daily rhythm.

Tower, church building and mill

The Dikke Toren consists of three storeys: the lower one is made of tuff, the middle one of brick with tuff bands, and the upper one entirely of brick. In 2026, the Dikke Toren will be open every Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. starting on 31 May. The H.H. Petrus en Paulus complex was built in the Neo-Gothic style from 1877 to 1879, based on a design by A. Tepe.

Varik’s Neo-Gothic Reformed Church has a pulpit dating from 1660 and a bell frame with a bell by Petit and Fritsen, probably dating from 1880. De Bol is a grain mill built in 1867. It replaced a wooden post mill that burned down in the summer of 1865; since then, the De Bol mill has been turning very regularly.

Trails through the floodplains and along the river

The Dikke Torenpad runs through the floodplain landscape near Varik and Heesselt, close to the Waal. Its starting point is at the De Bol ferry landing. The route passes an authentic flood shelter, circles a body of water with riparian woodland in the Heesseltse uiterwaarden, and then continues along the river on an unpaved path. For hikers, the trail thus combines floodplain landscape, water and proximity to the river in a varied sequence.

A seasonal ferry runs from the De Bol ferry landing to Heerewaarden, allowing hikers to connect to the Zandslagenpad. It operates from April to October. The Struinroute Zaltbommel–Varik also crosses by ferry at Heerewaarden to Varik; there, a solitary tower by the dyke welcomes hikers. The two routes have different focuses and help you plan your stay between floodplain trails, river landscape and a ferry crossing.

Regional flavours beside the Dikke Toren

Stokerij Lubberhuizen distils Eau de Vie, liqueurs and genever from fruit and other raw materials from the region. The distillery regularly offers private or in-depth tours with a special tasting of its own Eaux de Vie and cheese from Oudwijker. It is located in a beautifully restored fire station directly beside the characteristic Dikke Toren of Betuwse Varik on the Waal.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Varik, you can use your daily itinerary as a guide: those looking for trails through the floodplain landscape and along the river can include the Dikke Torenpad or the Struinroute. Those wishing to combine culture and regional specialities can include the Dikke Toren, De Bol and Stokerij Lubberhuizen in their personal itinerary.
