Opijnen is home to a specific place of remembrance, the “Monument voor Amerikaanse Militairen”. The memorial stone is made of polished Balmoral granite and commemorates eight crew members of the 91st Bomb Group who lost their lives in Opijnen on 30 July 1943.
The monument stands next to the N.H. kerk on Stoepstraat in Opijnen. The Hervormde Kerk is located at Stoepstraat 2 and is a Rijksmonument with number 30337. Its two-manual organ was built by H. Knipscheer in 1859. This means that Stoepstraat is home to both a memorial stone and a historic church building among Opijnen’s historic sites.

Landgoed Uytterwaerde: history of the house, gardens and terracotta
The present-day Huize Uytterwaerde was built in 1911 on the basement of a previous building dating from 1849. In addition to the house, Landgoed Uytterwaerde includes a network of paths with gates, landscaped gardens and terracotta fragments from the Opijnensche Steenfabriek. The estate lies near the village centre of Opijnen, between the Waaldijk and Repensestraat.
FRUITSCHUUR and garden wall at Huize Uytterwaerde
The FRUITSCHUUR is located at Huize Uytterwaerde. It was originally built as a fruit barn and is still used as one; it was later fitted with an elaborate cooling and ventilation system for this purpose. The garden wall at Huize Uytterwaerde has nine terracotta figures and seven fragments of figures. Most of the figures probably originate from designs by the sculptor H. A. van den Eijnde.
Ynenpad and route via Opijnen and Ophemert
The Ynenpad is a hiking trail through the surroundings of Neerijnen and Opijnen. Its temporary route through Neerijnen and Opijnen follows old clay pits, oxbow lakes, small beaches, riparian woodland and marshland in the Heesseltsche uiterwaarden. The landscape ranges from areas shaped by water to woodland and marshland. The flood warning is also relevant when planning the route: the Heesseltsche uiterwaarden are freely accessible except during high water. Anyone planning to walk the Ynenpad should consider the temporary route and the high-water exception separately.
The “Dijk van een route” route continues via Opijnen and Ophemert to Tiel after crossing the Waal via the Bommelse brug.
Annual events in Opijnen: village festival and memorial service
The annual events in Opijnen include two different community occasions. A village festival with a fair and Zeskamp takes place every year. There is also an annual memorial service for those who died in 1943.
