Ingen between local history and river landscapes

Ingen combines local history with river landscapes. The Sint-Lambertuskerk, the Op Hoop Van Beter windmill and the De Poel farmstead are all part of the local character. A ferry, along with hiking and cycling routes, adds paths into the river landscape.

Church, baptismal font and war memorial

The present-day Sint-Lambertuskerk in Ingen is a late Gothic three-aisled pseudo-basilica dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Its furnishings include a sandstone baptismal font from the 11th or 12th century. The present nave was built shortly after 1494; masonry made of tuff stone from an earlier building was uncovered in its east wall.

The church has shaped the townscape of Ingen since 1248. The church building combines the sandstone baptismal font and the tuff-stone masonry of the earlier building with the late Gothic form of the present nave.

The war memorial in Ingen commemorates six inhabitants of the village who died during the Second World War. The commemorative plaque for the war memorial in Ingen is located in the church at Kerkpad 2 in Ingen.

Windmill and De Poel farmstead

The Op Hoop Van Beter windmill was fully restored to working order following local initiatives and resumed operation as a grain mill in 1985. The listed De Poel farmstead is located east of Ingen’s village centre. It dates from 1648. This construction date places De Poel within the historical townscape.

By ferry between Ingen and Elst

The Veerdienst Ingen-Elst has provided an important river connection since 1487, also carries leisure travellers and operates on up to 17 hours a day, 365 days a year. When planning a crossing, this year-round service provides a specific time frame.

The Fietsroute Rhenen langs de Rijn cycling route turns towards the ferry between Ingen and Elst and passes through river landscapes with meadows, orchards and river nature. It is signposted or planned using a network of cycling junctions. Route planning can therefore take into account both the ferry turnoff and meadows, orchards and river nature as specific route features. On a cycling tour, the turnoff to the ferry can be included as a separate section of the route.

Romeinse Limespad and the Limes

The regional section of the Romeinse Limespad runs from Maurik along the Limes, passing Ingen and Ommeren. The Romeinse Limespad is a 286-kilometre hiking trail along the Neder-Germaanse Limes. This archaeological monument is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. For a single day of hiking, the route from Maurik via Ingen and Ommeren can be selected as a regional section. The total length of the trail represents a different planning scale from the regional section near Ingen.
