Eck en Wiel originated in the Middle Ages on a river ridge along the Nederrijn. The village’s history, river landscape and surviving buildings offer several fascinating perspectives. Architectural heritage between the church and the Rijnbandijk

The Hervormde kerk in Eck en Wiel is a late Gothic village church with a three-aisled pseudo-basilica nave and a choir closed on three sides. Its tower is a simple early Gothic structure with a short, recessed spire. Huis Vredestein is a plastered manor house set in an attractive garden dating from the second quarter of the 19th century. At Rijnbandijk 5 there is a listed farm complex built in 1841 on the site of the former Huis te Wiel.

The buildings near the river also tell stories of different periods. The Veerhuis near the Rijnbandijk may have a core dating from the 16th century, although most of it dates from the 18th century. The Veerhuis contains a mantelpiece featuring a painting and the year 1680. Veerweg 3 is an early 19th-century farm with a T-shaped floor plan at the corner of the Rijnbandijk.

Hiking through the river landscape

The Mauderick en Wielepad is a 14-kilometre hiking trail with a starting point at Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel on Veerweg 5. The trail leads along the Nederrijn floodplains, past old Eck en Wiel, over old paths and through a historic river landscape with orchards and tree cultivation. This makes it possible to structure a stay around a longer, clearly defined hike, while the landscape repeatedly changes between river floodplains, old paths and cultivated areas.

Floodplains, estate and regional delicacies

The Mauriksche Waarden and the Ecksche Waarden are located in the immediate vicinity of Eck en Wiel. Both are protected Natura 2000 nature areas consisting mainly of extensively managed grassland and several ponds. On the outskirts of Eck en Wiel there is also Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel, an estate covering more than 7 hectares, with bodies of water and orchards. The area was elevated to the status of a heerlijkheid by the Duke of Guelders in 1288.

Heerlijkheid also offers culinary options: the restaurant and Proeverij at Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel prepare fresh dishes using traditional methods and offer High Tea arrangements as well as an extensive buffet. Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for lunch and drinks. Ferry and e-bike facilities on site

The ferry connection between Eck en Wiel and Amerongen has existed for more than 200 years; since 2009, the Regina Fluminum II has been in service.
