Bintje, windmill and village church

A distinctive part of the village’s history is the Bintje potato variety. It was developed in 1905 by Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries, a schoolteacher in Sumar and potato breeder. The Bintje Monument commemorates the teacher and potato breeder Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries. The De Hoop grain mill also reflects the regional tradition of agriculture and food: it is open every Saturday and can be visited accompanied by a volunteer miller.

The village church of Sumar was built in 1769 and inaugurated on 12 November 1769. An organ by Bakker en Timmenga was put into use in the village church on 7 March 1907. The furnishings also include an oak pulpit, which probably dates from the mid-17th century and was likely already in the church before 1769. Six restored stained-glass windows by Ype Staak from 1771 add to the church’s cultural and historical features. The De Molkbus monument has stood in Sumar near the primary school since 1996.

For active discovery, the cultural and historical route “Op é Trapers” offers a themed connection through De Alde Feanen National Park. It leads through the villages of Sumar, Oudega and Opeinde and past various cultural and historical monuments.
