Jistrum on the Sandy Ridge

Jistrum originated in the early Middle Ages on a sandy ridge and is located in the Nationaal Landschap De Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. This gives you a destination where the sandy ridge as the origin of the village and the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden as a landscape area belong together. Paths, natural areas and distinctive buildings give a stay in Jistrum different accents.

Holiday Apartment in Jistrum: Discover the Village’s History

Jistrum’s local history and residential architecture include the Rijksmonument at Schoolstraat 8. It is an elongated residential building that was probably originally divided into several homes. The presumed former division remains qualified as the historical use of the house.

Church and Frisian Building Culture

Jistrum’s historical character includes the Doarpstsjerke Jistrum, a Late Romanesque brick church. Its west tower is somewhat older than the church and dates from approximately 1230. Another architectural feature is Burgumermarpleats, an 18th-century farmhouse of the “Burgumermarpleats” type. The west tower and the farmhouse therefore date from distinctly different centuries. The “Burgumermarpleats” building type occurs exclusively in the area around the Burgumer Mar. The farmhouse represents a different building purpose from the Late Romanesque church and brings farm architecture alongside the ecclesiastical building.

Walking Routes Through Heathland and Marshland

The Achterweg is a sandy path around Jistrum and marks the boundary between the former heathland and the former esch lands, where the fields once lay. The 8-kilometre walking route “Gemoedelijk Jistrum in het coulissenlandschap” includes the section “Burgumer Mar – Jistrum – De Dunen – Uitkijkheuvel” with reed beds and marshland. The sandy path and the section with reed beds and marshland therefore provide different landscape accents. The 8 kilometres give the walk a clear framework for planning your day.

Water and Longer Nature Observations

Zwemplek Blauwhoek is a bathing spot on the Burgumermeer and is located along the walking route “Gemoedelijk Jistrum in het coulissenlandschap”. For planning your day, this connection with the water can be combined with the route section. The 41-kilometre birdwatching route “Burgumer Mar en De Leien” also runs through the section “Burgumer Mar – Jistrum – De Dunen – Uitkijkheuvel” with reed beds and marshland. The 8 kilometres of the walking route and the 41 kilometres of the birdwatching route mark a clear distinction for planning your day between a shorter and a more extensive route.
