Aldtsjerk combines village history with art, water experiences and paths through diverse landscapes. This creates a destination where a stay in a holiday apartment in Aldtsjerk can be combined with historical discoveries, walks and active days. The character of the village is reflected in the alternation between carefully designed cultural sites, open landscapes and paths close to nature.
Holiday apartment in Aldtsjerk between an estate and village history
De Klinze is a historic estate northeast of the centre of Aldtsjerk. The complex includes a main building, a historic garden and parkland. The main building was constructed in 1655 by Hessel van Aysma under the name Aysmastate. Bosk-Ein is also part of the village’s architectural history: the gardener’s house, built in 1890 in the chalet style, originally belonged to Sminiastate.
The Sint-Pauluskerk was built in the mid-12th century, while its west tower dates from the early 13th century. Inside, there is a richly carved pulpit from 1630 and the Sminiabank, an elaborately designed manorial pew with a family coat of arms held by angels. Aldtsjerk therefore also offers interesting details for anyone wishing to take their time exploring historic architecture and artistically crafted interiors.
The Oudkerkermolen and Galerie Bloemrijk Vertrouwen provide further cultural impressions. The mill was founded in 1864 by a group of farmers; since 1989, the gallery has displayed contemporary abstract and stylised art. The Dorpshuis Oerein on Van Sminiaweg also presents a professional sound-and-slide show depicting the culture, nature and history of Aldtsjerk and its surroundings.
On Van Sminiaweg stands an iron riveted bascule bridge from the 1920s, which is currently operated as a self-service bridge. The IJsbaangebouw Aldtsjerk is a monument built in 1925 and commemorates the speed-skating races formerly held on the Aldtsjerkster Mar. The IJsclub Oudkerk has existed since 1865 and continues to organise competitions on the Oudkerkster Meer.
Routes, water and landscapes around Aldtsjerk
The 6.9-kilometre historical route through Oentsjerk and Aldtsjerk passes through the historic centre of Aldtsjerk and along numerous monuments. Another option is the Rondje Aldtsjerk – Wyns – Bartlehiem route. It is not signposted; for navigation, use the map or a downloaded GPX file.
The Toeristisch Overstappunt Trynwâlden serves as a starting point for exploring the surrounding region on foot, by bicycle or by boat. At TOP Trynwâlden, you can park your car and arrive by public transport; sometimes it is also possible to moor a boat there. Nearby are cycling and walking junction networks, as well as catering establishments and toilets. This combination may play a role when choosing a holiday apartment in Aldtsjerk if you want to combine different modes of transport.
The Stukje Elfsteden route starts at the foot of the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. The section of the Streekpad Noardlike Fryske Wâlden passes through a predominantly open landscape to the Houtwiel area, with rugged reed marshes and grassland. In the Grikelân en Turkije nature area, you can travel on horseback or on foot; many paths there run through oak groves.
The building at Marwei 3 in the Oudkerkstermeer is also a special landmark for planning excursions: it can only be reached by boat or on skates. Together with the Oudkerkster Meer, TOP Trynwâlden and the various walking and cycling routes, Aldtsjerk presents itself as a place for a wide range of day plans – from visits focused on cultural history to active hours in the landscape and on the water.
