Discover Lollum: Mound Village, Church and Waterway

Lollum is an old mound village that has probably existed for more than 1,500 years. The Hubertuskerk, the war memorial at Elshoutbuurt, and historical water and route connections are among the village’s defining features. In the village and the farmland around Lollum, there are various points of interest related to architectural history, remembrance and walking routes.

Church and Remembrance in Lollum

The Hubertuskerk in Lollum has been protected as a Dutch national heritage monument since 10 September 1968. Its oldest parts date from approximately 1200 to 1300. The war memorial at Elshoutbuurt is a sundial mounted on a concrete column. It commemorates the Frisian aid provided to the population of Amsterdam-Watergraafsmeer during the Hunger Winter of 1944–1945. Lollum therefore has a protected church building and a memorial with a specific connection to the wartime period standing alongside each other. Waterways and Pastureland

In the early 19th century, Lollum’s most important connection to Franeker and Bolsward was by water. At the same time, Lollum could only be reached on foot via muddy paths through the pastures. Franeker and Bolsward therefore formed the village’s historical external connection, while the pastures shaped the access to Lollum at that time. Molen Marswâl / Meerswal currently drains the Arumerpolder voluntarily. Its function differs from that of the former waterway: the mill serves to drain the polder, not to connect it with Franeker or Bolsward. The historical connection to two cities and the drainage of the Arumerpolder thus represent different functions of water around Lollum.

Walking in the Farmland

Rondje Rewerdstate was one of three new walking routes through the farmland around Lollum that were opened to the public on 18 November 2018. The route’s name directs attention to the landscape. Its focus is on the areas around Lollum rather than on a single building in the village. Those wishing to combine a walk with the village’s historical features can view Rondje Rewerdstate as a landscape counterpart to the two points of interest in the village.

Destinations in the Immediate Surroundings

The immediate surroundings of Lollum also include the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, the Schuilkerkje Menno Simons and De Stenen Man. These three destinations complement the historical points in the village with specific names from the nearby area. Their geographical location distinguishes them from the points situated directly in Lollum and at Elshoutbuurt. Wider Regional Area

The wider regional area around Lollum includes Rookoepolle, Lange Warren, Rakkenpolle, Langehoekspolle and the Fries Museum.
