Discover Parrega: Trekvaart and Cultural Heritage

Parrega reveals its character along the Workumertrekvaart: the ribbon-like settlement connects a distinctive church, historic architecture, paths through the meadows and the landscape of the Workumermeerpolder. The Workumertrekvaart is both part of the villagescape and part of the Fietsroute langs trekvaarten in Friesland. The linear settlement pattern continues in the village’s paths and waterways.

Church and villagescape

The Johannes de Doperkerk stands on a terp-like elevation in the centre of the ribbon-like settlement of Parrega on the Workumer Trekvaart. A cemetery surrounds the church and thus shapes its immediate villagescape. In 2026, the Johannes de Doperkerk will participate in Tsjerkepaad. The church therefore stands at a precise intersection of elevation, village centre, waterway and cemetery. In 2026, participation in Tsjerkepaad will add a time-specific cultural reference to the villagescape of Parrega.

Historic traces along the Trekweg

The former village tavern stands at Trekweg 58; it is a Rijksmonument with monument number 39422. The building is now Café De Harmonie and appears as a two-storey transverse building with a hipped roof dating from the first half of the 19th century. Its current use as a café and its 19th-century architectural form represent two historical layers of the same building. The development of the village can also be traced spatially: between 1875 and 1925, Parrega expanded in a ribbon-like form southwards along the western side of the Workumertrekvaart and the Trekweg, and eastwards along the Hortsweg towards Hieslum. These lines give the villagescape a clear historical character.

Cycle paths, trekvaarten and fishing spot

The Pontje-Fietsrondje rondom Workum cycle route leads shortly after Parrega along a narrow path through the meadows to Greonterp. The Fietsroute langs trekvaarten in Friesland follows two towpaths: along the Workumertrekvaart between Workum and Bolsward, and along the Bolswardertrekvaart between Bolsward and Leeuwarden. The Workumertrekvaart fishing spot is located in Parrega and is considered particularly rich in fish. For route planning, the type of path is a specific distinction: shortly after Parrega, a narrow meadow path leads to Greonterp, while the other route follows the two towpaths. On a cycling tour, the narrow meadow path shortly after Parrega to Greonterp remains clearly recognisable as a distinct type of path. In Parrega, the cycle route and fishing spot are therefore located on the same waterway, the Workumertrekvaart.

Polder landscape and island names

The Workumermeerpolder is reclaimed land. Lake Workum was drained in 1877; today, the area lies at an elevation of 3 metres below NAP. In the vicinity of Parrega are the Schuilkerkje Menno Simons monument and the islands of Boterpol, Langehoekspolle, Nieuwe Kruispolle and Leijepolle. The wider regional area also includes the De Stenen Man monument, the historic site of Sterne Slotland (It Sjûkelân) and the historic site of the Eise Eisinga Planetarium.
