Uitwellingerga is interesting for travelers who want to combine waterways, nature observation and cultural history in one trip. A circular route of around 11 kilometers leads from Sneek via Uitwellingerga and the Sneekermeer along the Houkesloot back to Sneek. In addition, there is the distinctive polder mill on the Doltesloot, protected historic buildings and special landscapes with wetlands and birdlife.

Waterways around Uitwellingerga

Several dimensions and restrictions are important when planning a trip on the water. The circular route reaches Uitwellingerga via the Watersportboulevard It Ges. Boats more than 3.90 meters wide cannot pass along the section over the Watersportboulevard It Ges. The bridge at Uitwellingerga is also currently unable to accommodate shipping traffic because of its poor condition. Vessels from 7.10 meters in height must therefore take a detour via IJlst and Sneek. Anyone choosing a holiday apartment in Uitwellingerga and planning water-based activities can take these details into account when planning their own route.

Nature between the lake, polders and pastureland

Lake Aldhôf, known in Dutch as de Oudhof, lies southeast of Sneek in the middle of the de Witte en Zwarte Brekken nature area and is part of a Natura 2000 area. East of Oppenhuizen lies the Geeuwpolder, a summer polder that is now a nature area. Another natural highlight is located at the De Staten – Kijkheuvel viewpoint: The area is best visited in spring, and from the viewpoint you can look out over a wetland. Among other species, you can observe common terns, black terns, marsh harriers and common snipe there. This allows you to combine active excursions with quieter moments in nature, without every day of your vacation needing to have the same focus.

Polder mill and Frisian local history

The Uitwellingerga polder mill was built on the Doltesloot in 1920. It is a working American wind engine of the Herkules brand and, because of its significance in the landscape, a distinctive landmark in the pastureland near the Sneekermeer. It is also the only surviving medium-sized “Energy” wind engine in the Netherlands. The Hermes-tsjerke in Uitwellingerga is protected as a Rijksmonument. During Tsjerkepaad 2026, it is open every Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. from July 4 to September 12; the focus is on the interactive exhibition “Door het water van de doop” about baptisms and baptismal gowns.

The former tram stop at Brêgesleatswei 1 also points to the village’s past. It was built during the construction of the Sneek–Joure tram line in 1886. By contrast, the annual village festivals, organized by the Oranjevereniging Oppenhuizen and Uitwellingerga, reflect the present day and community spirit. They often include sports and games activities, live music, bingo and a fairground ride.
