Holiday apartment in Arum: History and waterways

Arum combines vivid local history with paths through a landscape shaped by water. The village was built on a terp, an artificial settlement mound that provided protection from the water. At the same time, the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband forms the foundation and heart of the Gouden Land area, which includes Kimswerd, Pingjum, Witmarsum and Zurich as well as Arum. Churches, monuments and architectural history

The Lambertus Church and its tower form a complex built in 1837 according to plans by Th. Romein. Its furnishings include an organ made in 1885 by F. Leichel & Zn. Another notable listed monument is Rijksmonument Schoolsingel 7: the school building, founded in 1832, has a hipped roof, corner chimneys and Gothic Revival windows.

The culture of remembrance is also part of the village landscape. The war memorial in Arum is a granite memorial stone shaped like an open book. It commemorates eight villagers who died during the Second World War or during the colonial war in Indonesia. De Gekroonde Leeuw is a former inn in the eclectic style. It served as a stop on the Harlingen–Bolsward tram line, established in 1881. The passageway from gate to gate is still preserved, as are the stables in their original location.

The remains of Camminghastate are another part of the area's historical traces. They are an archaeological Rijksmonument comprising a complex surrounded by a moat.

Walking between the Feart, fields and coastal ridges

For walks, the Witmarsum–Arum walking route connects the village with the course of the Arumer Feart. The Schuttedijk was originally constructed in the Middle Ages to dam the Marneslenk. Despite successive land consolidation projects, it has been preserved and is now part of a walking route through the fields and over the coastal ridges around Pingjum. This makes it possible to combine landscape history and activity directly.

A longer option is stage 11 of the Klooster Claercamppad, which is 16.9 km long. It passes through Arum; there, walkers circle the church before continuing to the Pingjumer Gulden Halsband. Between points 70 and 79, the stage deviates from the walking network. For navigation, the route advises using its GPX file. The different route lengths make it easier to plan your own outing according to your desired walking distance and thematic focus.

The Arumer Feart itself is also clearly designated: section C 062 runs from the Harnzer Feart, A 038, to the municipal boundary with Waadhoeke. A maximum speed of 6 km/h is specified for this section.

Village life as an additional travel highlight

Kaatsen, the traditional Frisian form of handball, is still deeply rooted in village life in Arum today.
