Holiday apartment in Warfstermolen: Sea dike landscape, walking routes and Túnwille
Accommodation in Warfstermolen
Warfstermolen is a place whose character can be read in an old sea dike, a linear settlement and clearly defined paths through the landscape. A holiday apartment in Warfstermolen opens up various ideas for day trips: dike history, walking, cycling and a rest point each provide their own focus. You can consider historical orientation, activity and breaks as separate focal points of your stay.
Dike history and settlement pattern
The name element “Warf” already refers to a house on the dike where dike meetings were held. This linguistic trace stands alongside the dike landscape and makes the local history a tangible part of your stay. The name combines the place name and dike history in a memorable detail.
Warfstermolen developed as a linear village along the old sea dike built around 1315, probably after the new dike around Nieuwkruisland was constructed in 1529.
Today, Warfstermolen consists of a relatively compact linear settlement located mainly on the southern side of the old dike, as well as a modest post-war extension on the southern side. In the marine clay area, Warfstermolen is one of the settlements that developed along former sea dikes after the 13th century. The pattern of roads and paths reflects the land reclamation and polder formation along the Lauwerszee.
In recent years, the northern slope of the dike has been a floral spectacle in summer. For walks and brief landscape experiences, this seasonal impression offers a different way of experiencing the dike edge than the historical context and longer routes.
