Churches with a special history

The interior of Terpkerk is older than the 1784 building and is still largely in use today. Terpkerk also houses a Van Oeckelen organ, one of the few such organs in Friesland. The Reformed Church in Burum was rebuilt in 1784. For culture-focused holiday days, architectural history and music come together here in a special way.

The Rechtersteen and Burum’s legal history

The legal stone, known in Dutch as Rechtersteen, is located at the eastern corner of Burum’s cemetery. In medieval Burum, the judge sat here to administer local justice. The stone recalls the former secular jurisdiction of Gerkesklooster over Burum. This particular location is a suitable point of reference if you would also like to take regional history into account when planning your trip.

Windlust and “voetval”

The present-day Windlust was newly built in 2013/2014. Its predecessor, an octagonal gallery windmill dating from 1787, was completely destroyed by fire on 8 April 2012. Along the route stands “voetval”, a chapel-shaped work of art in honour of Foekje Dillema, the record-breaking runner from Burum. Both topics give culturally interested travellers different perspectives on the village.

Open clay landscape as a point of orientation

Burum’s large satellite dishes are visible from a great distance in the open clay landscape. Anyone who pays attention to the character of the landscape when choosing accommodation can incorporate this highly visible feature into their holiday planning.

Waterways around De Dwinger

The De Dwinger transit marina is approximately two kilometres by water from the De Lauwers. From Marina De Dwinger, the De Lauwers can be reached; the river directly connects the Lauwersmeer with the Prinses-Margrietkanaal. If you consider waterways part of your travel idea, this connection can be taken into account in your location planning alongside church and landscape themes.

Castles and beaches in the wider area

The area around Burum is home to Fogelsangh State, Panser, Verhildersum and Coendersborg; all four are castles. The wider regional area around Burum also includes the beaches Het Rif, Westerstrand, Oosterstrand and Het Hen. This means the range of themes extends from regional architectural heritage to destinations by the water. You can therefore weigh up which focus best suits your interests for your holiday apartment and the days you spend on holiday together.
