Holiday apartment in Dronten – Discover nature, art and water

Dronten combines extensive nature trails, public art and a 60-kilometre coastal zone. In the area around Dronten, IVN Dronten offers several hiking routes with information about nature and cultural history. The municipality also includes beaches, extensive lakes and numerous small islands.

Nature and trails

Roggebotzand is the oldest forest in Oostelijk Flevoland and has numerous paths for walking through the forest. The seven-hectare Torenbosje is also one of Flevoland’s oldest forests. It has a natural playground and several picnic benches. Every day from sunrise to sunset, visitors can also complete a 1.5-kilometre historical treasure hunt in Torenbosje.

Several routes lead through the forests of the municipality of Dronten, with different distances and themes. The cultural-historical De Abbert route runs through the Reve-Abbertbos near Dronten and is 5.5 kilometres long. The paved Mindervalidenpad Wisentbos walking trail is 2.1 kilometres long and is suitable for wheelchair users and people with physical disabilities. The 4.4-kilometre Stobbenroute runs entirely through the Reve-Abbert forest; sheep, cattle and ponies may be seen along the way. The 8.3-kilometre Beverroute Dronten runs through the Harderbos, where visitors can look for beaver tracks. The 3.5-kilometre Swifterbos nature walk is also located in the municipality of Dronten and passes through a varied landscape with different landforms.

Water and activities

The Watersportvereniging Dronten allows boaters travelling through the area to moor in its harbour in the centre of Dronten. The De Abelen outdoor swimming pool in Swifterbant has a competition pool, a teaching pool and a large lawn measuring approximately 50 × 70 metres. Water activities such as aqua jogging, Zwem4daagse, water treasure hunts, water volleyball and tug of war are regularly organised there.

There are also unusual activity options away from the water: Shortgolf Swifterbant is a natural 18-hole golf course. No golf licence is required to play, and equipment is provided on site. The cycling route through the Oostrand is 62.2 kilometres long and can be divided into shorter sections.

Art and history

The Lixenberg “25 + 1” sculpture route consists of 26 sculptures in public spaces. They were created in 1997 to mark the 25th anniversary of Dronten. The Lixenberg art route in Dronten and Flevoland can be explored by bicycle, on foot or by car. The Oostrand also has the “BeKIJK het in de Oostrand” art and culture route, which focuses on local history and culture.

The landscape artwork Riff, PD#18245, is located near Biddinghuizen. It is one of ten landscape artworks in Flevoland and was part of the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Zuiderzee Act. The former harbour head Kop van 't Ende was preserved as a monument after Oostelijk-Flevoland was reclaimed. De Meerpaal is considered cultural heritage of Oostelijk-Flevoland and offers cinema, theatre, concerts, cabaret and other stage performances.

The Mechanisch Erfgoed Centrum displays historic internal combustion engines, steam engines, locomotives, vehicles, sewing machines, toys, old tools and a large collection of agricultural equipment. At Brouwerij Artemis, a farm has a tasting room where visitors can sample the beers brewed there, as well as Flevoland juices and other drinks.

Further attractions

Walibi Holland has 40 attractions, including eight roller coasters. Het Grote Kabouterbos offers playhouses among the trees, a large jumping cushion, swings, water-play features and a pancake house.

Dronten can be reached via the Hanzelijn; train connections to Dronten are available from Zwolle, Lelystad and Amsterdam Centraal.
