Roderwolde between landscape and village history
Roderwolde combines wetlands, distinctive hiking trails, and tangible village history. De Kleibosch, De Onlanden, historic churches, and the Woldzigt oil and grain mill give the village several thematic focal points. Between forest and water are trails, geological traces, and buildings with a history of their own. At the end of August, the annual Openluchtspel open-air theater is an additional attraction.
De Kleibosch: wet woodland along the Peizerdiep
De Kleibosch near Roderwolde is a very wet woodland on the edge of the Peizerdiep valley. Remains of old clay pits are visible along its winding paths. The paths therefore lead through a woodland where, alongside trees and dampness, traces of clay extraction are also part of the landscape.
At the same time, the woodland has the status of a provincial geological monument because pottery clay lies at the surface. Its geological character is therefore immediately visible in the terrain and stands alongside the woodland’s exceptional wetness.
De Onlanden and the Groeningenpad
North of Roderwolde, De Onlanden extends across a wetland area with grassland, marshes, swamp woodlands, and waterways. In the second section of the Groeningenpad, the trail runs past reed beds and natural play areas. The route passes through changing open and wet landscapes; waterways, reed beds, and swamp woodlands form distinct landscape elements.
Hiking trails of 5.5 and 15.5 kilometers
Two different distances are the focus for longer days of hiking. The Knapzakroute Roderwolde-Foxwolde (K24) is 15.5 kilometers long. De Kleibosch also offers an unsigned 5.5-kilometer hiking route. The longer route requires a larger time frame for planning the day than the shorter one. The 5.5-kilometer route is not signposted; this information is therefore just as important for planning as the route length. On the 5.5-kilometer route in De Kleibosch, the lack of signage is part of planning the hiking day before setting out.
Churches and architectural history in Roderwolde
Roderwolde’s architectural and church history also gives the village a distinctive profile. The new Reformed church in Roderwolde was built in 1831 at Hoofdstraat 25. The tower and façade were built from salvaged materials from the old church.
The Jacobskerk in Roderwolde also contains a baptismal font from the 15th century.
Woldzigt: oil and grain mill with demonstration
The Woldzigt oil and grain mill in Roderwolde was built in 1852. A demonstration of oil pressing takes place at Woldzigt on the first Saturday of every month. The mill’s visiting hours include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons.
Open-air theater at the end of August
Another event is the Openluchtspel in Roderwolde: the open-air theater takes place annually at the end of August.
