Culture and History

The Zavičajni Museum Bar is housed in the summer residence of King Nikola, built in 1885, next to the Topolica waterfront promenade. The King Nikola Palace complex is protected as immovable cultural heritage in category II. It comprises a small palace, a court chapel, a conservatory and a park with rare trees and exotic Mediterranean vegetation.

In the ruins of Stari Bar, visitors can walk among restored palaces and churches and see an aqueduct and a Turkish bath. The fortress of Stari Bar is divided into the Lower Town, Middle Town and Upper Town. The old town of Bar also preserves the remains of more than 260 former buildings. A gallery organizes solo and group exhibitions by contemporary academic visual artists.

Nature and Activities

Bar provides access to experiences both on the Adriatic and at Lake Skadar. These include boat trips on Lake Skadar, the 115-kilometre panoramic route “Between Two Magical Shores” with seven viewpoints, visits to Old Bar and the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica, as well as diving and sailing.

The Old Olive Tree of Mirovica near Bar is a protected natural monument associated with Bar. It is believed to be more than 2,200 years old; it belongs to the žutica variety and produces olive oil. Bar is surrounded by mountain ranges, warm seawater and city panoramas.

Port and City

Marina Bar is located at the entrance to the Adriatic and has 660 berths for vessels up to 45 metres long. It offers engine maintenance, engine repairs and vessel cleaning services. To enter Marina Bar, border control at Pier 5 of the commercial port of Bar is required; Pier 5 is located a few hundred metres from the marina entrance.

A city beach is located near the port of Bar.

Markets and Cuisine

Bar has two markets: an old market in the city centre and a newer Bar market near the bus station. The market stalls sell homemade olive oil, olives, mandarins, pomegranates and dried figs. Fish, olive oil and wines from Crmnica and the Skadar Basin are part of Bar’s local culinary identity.

Barsko zlato is named as a local olive oil brand associated with Bar. Žutica is named as a native olive variety associated with Bar.
