Pétange: Nature, Industrial Heritage and Special Travel Experiences

Pétange is a destination where industrial heritage, nature trails and local meeting places make different kinds of holiday possible. The Train 1900 offers a special connection between landscape and history: it departs next to Pétange CFL railway station and covers the 8 km to Fond-de-Gras in approximately 25 minutes. It uses the former «Ligne des Minières», which was opened from 1874 onwards by the Compagnie de Chemins de Fer et Minières Prince Henri (PH). At the time, the line was used to transport iron ore from nearby mines.

The Train 1900 reaches Fuussbësch. From there, the Giele Botter nature reserve with its geological educational trail can be reached. The journey is therefore suitable for anyone who does not want to view historic railways in isolation, but combine them with a journey through the landscape and insights into the region’s former mining history.

The WAX site also tells the story of the transformation of places shaped by industry. It is located in a former mill in Rue d’Athus in Pétange. Following renovation and refurbishment work, the mill was given a new use as a socio-cultural meeting place in 2012. For your travel planning, this offers a cultural highlight that is clearly different from the paths and natural areas around Prënzebierg and Giele Botter.

Trails in the Prënzebierg Nature Reserve

The Prënzebierg nature reserve offers tourists and walkers two trails: the discovery trail and the geological educational trail. The «Prënzebierg–Giele Botter» discovery trail passes through a former open-cast mine. More than twenty orchid species can be discovered along it. The Giele Botter geological educational trail is 2.5 km long. Nine information panels explain the formation, properties and extraction of Minette there.

These two trails offer different perspectives on Pétange: the discovery trail combines observing nature with the history of open-cast mining, while the geological educational trail provides an accessible explanation of Minette’s distinctive features. Sport, Tradition and Places of Remembrance

For active days during your holiday, the Centre QT has three tennis courts available. The public can use them after making a reservation and paying a fee. In addition, six of the twelve bowling lanes at the Centre QT can be used by the public. This allows you to add sport and communal activities to your travel plans.

The traditional Cavalcade is also part of Pétange’s cultural identity, with its first edition dating back to 1937. Another place commemorates the history of resistance and escape assistance: the Borne du Passeur was inaugurated on 28 May 1961. It honours all escape helpers, members of escape-assistance networks and members of the resistance. A monument erected by the Pétange scouts also commemorates Jacques Chauvin at the place where his body was found; he died on 10 May 1940 as one of the French fatalities.

Regional Products and Paths by the Water

Along the Pétange hiking route, the Kuerbuttek in Rue Pierre Hamer sells seasonal regional fruit and vegetables from organic farming. It is run by CIGL Pétange. Anyone wishing to discover regional products while travelling can thus find a concrete connection to the place and its local supply.

After leaving Pétange, the CFL hiking trail «Pétange–Kleinbettingen» follows the course of the Chiers stream. This trail adds a different landscape perspective to the geological and historical experiences.
