Kopstal is a worthwhile destination if you want to combine nature experiences, physical activity and regional culture. Hiking trails lead through the Mamer Valley, past impressive rock formations and idyllic floodplain woodlands. There are also historical insights into the willow weaving industry, the Church of Saint Nicolas and a cultural centre with a varied programme. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore particularly useful to consider whether you want to focus on short circular routes, longer hikes, cultural discoveries or good connections to Luxembourg City.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

The KO1 hiking trail begins at Kopstal Town Hall at 28, rue de Saeul, 8189 Kopstal. It is 8.94 km long and has an elevation gain of 191 m. The self-guided AP Kopstal circular route starts at the junction of rue de Mersch and rue de Saeul, 8189 Kopstal. At 9.61 km long and with an elevation gain of 232 m, it offers a slightly longer alternative. This information helps you take the desired route length into account when planning your day, without presupposing a specific walking time or level of difficulty.

Around Kopstal, you can explore the wooded surroundings and the Mamer stream with its numerous mills, for example on a 22 km-long national hiking trail. Self-guided circular routes of varying lengths also lead through the hills around Kopstal. The Kopstal Auto-Pédestre trail runs around the Muesbierg, first through the Mamer Valley and then through the Lédeleschbur Valley. If you would like to include the CFL Trail 15a, you will find the signposted connection in the Weidendall, about 1 km beyond Kopstal.

Landscape by the water and regional history

The Mamer runs through the centre of Kopstal and thus shapes an important part of the townscape. On the KO1 and KO2 trails, hikers experience the Mamer Valley with its rock formations and floodplain woodlands. This allows you to vary your days: one day with a self-guided circular route through the hills, and another with a longer route along the wooded surroundings and the stream. For families with different interests, it is advisable to compare the route lengths and elevation gains in advance and plan the daily rhythm accordingly.

Kopstal also has notable cultural attractions. The Church of Saint Nicolas de Kopstal is considered an important cultural heritage site because of its stained-glass windows. They were designed by Nina and Julien Lefèvre and created by Jacques Colpaert. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kopstal was also home to a thriving willow weaving industry. The extensive willow plantations that existed in the town at that time were the origin of the present-day place name “Weidendall”. The municipality’s cultural centre complements this history with a varied programme.

Accommodation and planning excursions

Numerous bus routes connect Kopstal with the centre of Luxembourg City and with surrounding towns. This is a relevant consideration if you are choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home as a base for hikes and excursions and do not want to travel everywhere by car. When doing so, consider which experiences are important for your trip: the starting points of KO1 and AP Kopstal, access to the CFL Trail 15a, routes through the Mamer Valley or the cultural attractions in the town. A specific accommodation option on site is the Weidendall guesthouse and restaurant, which also offers rooms.

The town’s distinctive character also includes the “Motocross” event, traditionally held every year on 1 May by the Motoclub Kopstal-Bridel. If this date fits your travel plans, it adds a markedly different experience to the tranquil landscape and cultural attractions. For more travel ideas, you can then expand your selection: Greisch, Mamer, Olm, Steinfort, Gaichel, Hobscheid, Eischen and Bascharage.
