Ukmergė District Municipality offers many different ways to explore: the Šventoji flows through Ukmergė, museums tell the story of regional history, and several paths wind through parks and along the river. There are also manor houses, a meteorite crater, and the Vepriai Calvaries. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether culture, walks, or sacred history should take centre stage.
Museums and manor houses
The Ukmergė Local History Museum presents the region’s history chronologically. Its subjects include natural history, archaeology, history, ethnography, written culture, and art. The archaeological collection includes finds from Obeliai, Berzgainiai, Antatilčiai, the Ukmergė hillfort, as well as Samantoniai, Sukiniai, Bečiai, and Pabaiskas. The museum thus offers different ways to explore the region’s past, from archaeological finds to exhibits on written culture and natural history.
The manor houses also tell different stories. The surviving Neoclassical Taujėnai Manor was built by Benediktas Morikonis at the end of the 18th century. Siesikai Manor Castle is Lithuania’s only surviving Renaissance building with a fortified residential function. The Užugirio School Museum is located in the village of Užulėnis, in a manor-house-style building that Antanas Smetona, the first president of the Republic of Lithuania, gave to the people of his home region. His summer residence is traditionally called Užugirio Manor; Smetona himself called the estate Užugirio kiemas.
Other buildings in Ukmergė recall a range of religious and historical contexts. Historical sources mention that Vilkmergė Castle stood on the Ukmergė hillfort. The Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity is a Neo-Byzantine masonry church; it was built as an Orthodox church in 1868. Visitors interested in religious art and history can also find, at the Rimantas Zinkevičius Folk Art Museum, nativity scenes, devotional figures, sculptures of saints, and fairy-tale and fantasy characters created by the artist over the course of his life.
Riverside paths, parks, and nature
There are paths of varying lengths and with different facilities for outdoor activities. The Mirabelių Path is a 1 km walking route with access to the river, a children’s playground, and places to rest and picnic. The 800 m Podolės-Kameneco Path is a cycling and walking route along the Šventoji. It is lit and has a water point, benches, and a children’s playground. The stated lengths can help you factor these paths into your daily plans without treating them as equivalent.
Ukmergė Health Park covers more than 12 hectares. Its facilities include walking paths, fitness trails with exercise equipment, a children’s playground, restored ponds, and a rose garden. Pilies Park has walking paths, a playground, outdoor musical instruments, and three illuminated viewpoints. If you like to mix walking with other activities on an outing, you can take these different park facilities into account. Pivonijos Forest is a popular spot for residents and visitors to walk and enjoy active leisure.
The landscape around Vepriai also has a distinctive history. The Vepriai crater is the largest discovered meteorite crater in Lithuania. The Vepriai Calvaries comprise 35 Stations of the Cross in the southeastern part of the town of Vepriai, between Lake Vepriai and the Šventoji. They extend for a total of 5.5 km. The Veprių krašto muziejus preserves ethnographic, historical, and sacred heritage from the surrounding area, including chapel pillars that survived the Soviet era.
In the wider travel region, the bends of the Šventoji are part of the Šventoji Ichthyological Sanctuary. It was established in 1974 in the Anykščiai, Ukmergė, and Jonava district municipalities to protect the spawning grounds of salmon, sea trout, brown trout, and vimba bream. Visitors interested in culture and travellers who enjoy spending time outdoors can weigh these different priorities when choosing a holiday apartment, rather than reducing the municipality to just one type of outing.
