Mažeikių District Municipality: Museums, Manor Culture and History
Accommodation in Mažeikių District Municipality
Mažeikių District Municipality can be explored through very different traces of its cultural history: one museum combines regional history and archaeology with the oil industry; elsewhere, manor culture, a historic pharmacy and a hillfort offer their own distinct subjects. For a trip that caters to different interests, you can choose between exhibitions, historic buildings and outdoor experiences.

Museums spanning regional history and oil
Mažeikių Museum presents the history, archaeology, ethnography and folk art of the Žemaitija region. Its exhibitions include “Mažeikių kraštas: tarp kuršių, žiemgalių ir žemaičių” (“The Mažeikiai Region: Between the Curonians, Semigallians and Samogitians”), which focuses on the cultural heritage of the Curonians, Semigallians and Samogitians. This exhibition gives a museum visit a regional focus, while other subjects turn attention to different aspects of the past and culture.
The permanent exhibition “Naftos kelias” (“The Oil Route”) is devoted to the extraction and processing of petroleum products, production processes and products, and the history of the Mažeikiai oil refinery. Alongside archaeology and folk art, the museum also covers industrial history. Those travelling in a group with varied interests can find regional cultural history here, as well as a specific insight into oil processing—two distinct subjects.
Pharmacy history and manor culture
Viekšniai Pharmacy Museum is a rural-style pharmacy museum. The preserved areas include the living quarters of the pharmacist’s family, and the pharmacy’s history has been recorded entirely by hand. The exhibitions lead from pharmacy to the home of an intellectual from the first half of the 20th century, and on to the medicinal herb garden. Medicinal and culinary herbs are grown there, and practical educational activities are also offered.
Another point of interest is the organic medicinal herb farm of Jadvyga Balvočiūtė, a herbalist and pharmacognosist. Groups and individual visitors come to see its medicinal plant exhibition. Together with the pharmacy museum’s herb garden, it invites visitors to explore medicinal plants in two different settings.
Since 2012, a museum exhibition at the restored Renavas Manor Estate has introduced visitors to Lithuanian manor culture. Dautarai Manor is also associated with culture: it hosts the “Muzikinė vasara Dautaruose” (“Musical Summer in Dautarai”) festival. These places add manor culture and a festival to museum visits, without forming a single unified programme.
Buildings and outdoor sites
Pikeliai Holy Trinity Church is an architectural monument of national significance. Its seven Renaissance- and Baroque-style altars are also recognised as nationally significant works of art. For visitors interested in culture, the church offers a distinct perspective on historic architecture and religious art.
Near Gyvoliai stands the hillfort known as Švedkalnis: a small defensive fort dating from the 1st millennium to the 13th century. Existing facilities include wooden boardwalks, an information board, a viewpoint and visitor paths. The Plinkšiai Recreation Area offers a different kind of experience. It is suitable for events and has several viewpoints, as well as a path adapted for the recreation of people with disabilities.
A technical structure is also among the area’s cultural attractions: the railway bridge complex over the Venta, Geležinkelio tilto per Ventą statinių kompleksas, is classified as an immovable cultural asset. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider whether museums and manor culture, buildings or outdoor destinations will be the main focus of your trip. Other local pages within the municipality lead to Kalnėnai and Seda.
