City History in Dates and Views
Vilkaviškis is one of the older towns in the Sūduva region and has been mentioned in historical chronicles since the early 16th century. In 1660, the town was granted Magdeburg rights. The early mention and the later grant of town rights are distinct historical reference points: one refers to the written record of the place, while the other marks a precisely dated step in its urban history. Taken together, they show different aspects of its historical development.
The town garden was established in 1928 under the name “Lietuvos nepriklausomybės dešimtmečio jubiliejui paminėti miesto sodas.” The model of the old town shows buildings from the 17th to the 19th centuries, as well as the town plan of the time, with the streets as they were in 1812. It sets buildings from several centuries alongside a specific version of the town plan. In this way, building history and the street layout offer two different perspectives on the town.
Architecture from Different Eras
The brick Neo-Romanesque church was built between 1870 and 1881, consecrated in 1884 under the patronage of the Visitation of Mary, and elevated to cathedral status in 1926. Its construction, consecration and elevation mark different stages in its history. A contrasting architectural feature is the modern bus station, built in 2020. Its architect, G. Balčytis, received the National Prize for Culture and Arts for its open architecture, welcoming to the city and its people. Together, these buildings trace a journey from Neo-Romanesque religious architecture to a modern transport building.
Walking Route Along the Šeimena
The walking route through the town centre along the Šeimena River crosses twelve bridges and smaller footbridges, including two unusual bridges beneath bridges. It also passes the town’s history and distinctive features. The crossings give the route a striking architectural motif; its historical context also makes it a walk centred on Vilkaviškis itself.
