Culture and History

Šakiai is a small town in Lithuania's Marijampolė County and the seat of the municipal administration of Šakiai District Municipality.

The first church in Šakiai was founded in 1719. When the town received city rights in the mid-19th century, it had four schools.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Šakiai was built in 1842; its tower was added in 1877.
