Discover Lielirbe at the Irbe Estuary

Lielirbe lies on both banks of the Irbe River and stretches for around 6 kilometres to its estuary. The village combines river landscapes, the coast and an unusually rich history: here, hiking and cycling routes meet traces of Livonian culture, the former port economy and memories of a village that disappeared after the Second World War.

Exploring the area between the Irbe River and the coast

The bridge over the Irbe River is particularly important for finding your way around Lielirbe. It is the only way to cross the river in the village. The bridge, renovated in 2020, is open to pedestrians and cyclists and can be used safely; at the same time, no more than eight people may be on it at once. Anyone planning a hike or cycling tour should therefore take this restricted crossing into account when making their plans.

For hikers, the bridge is part of the long-distance Jūrtaka hiking route. Cyclists can use it on the international EuroVelo 13 and EuroVelo 10 cycling routes. In addition, the restored bridge allows pedestrians and cyclists to use the historic nature trail Līvzemes Mazbānīša taka. This makes it possible to combine different travel interests without equating the different routes: one focus is on a longer hiking route, while the other is on international cycling routes or a historic nature trail.

The Lielirbe area borders the Ovīši Nature Reserve. Near Lielirbe, the Jūrtaka section passes a seasonal nature reserve at the Irbe Estuary. Staying there is prohibited from 1 April to 1 August. For your travel planning, it is therefore important to consider the intended period and the specific route section carefully.

Discovering Livonian history on site

In addition to the routes mentioned above, Lielirbe is also known for significant historical features. The first school opened in 1872 as an Orthodox elementary school and remained in operation until the First World War. The Lielirbe prayer house has an interactive computer providing information about its history and significance for the region’s spiritual life.

A memorial marker and a wooden cross mark the site of the Baptist prayer house, which stood there until 2011. Several burial mounds in Lielirbe are classified as archaeological monuments. The name of the village was first recorded in 1387 in an arbitration document as Irvemünde. In the 1920s and 1930s, Lielirbe was the only coastal Livonian village with a Livonian majority. In 1939, there were around 70 houses and approximately 300 inhabitants; later, Lielirbe became one of the largest villages to disappear after the Second World War.

The village’s maritime past is also part of its character. Lielirbe’s small harbour was an active centre for the timber trade and timber transport in the late 19th century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, more sailing ships were launched in Lielirbe than in any other coastal village in Courland. A map from the second half of the 17th century already records a harbour in Lielirbe.
