Dzirnavas is shaped by the Ugāle Watermills on the banks of the Engure. The village brings together mill history, a technical waterworks and an active leisure attraction: the Ugāle brick kiln is next to the mills, and the Usmas Golf Club is right beside them on the left bank of the Engure. This close proximity makes Dzirnavas an interesting place to discover if you want to explore different sides of a destination rather than focus your stay on a single theme.

Mill History and Water Engineering

The Ugāle Watermills were built around 1843. In addition to the usual grain milling, a wool-carding operation also developed there. Carding arranges wool fibres and prepares them for further processing; the mills therefore processed not only grain but also wool. This change in raw materials offers a tangible way into the working history of the place: at the mills, food processing and textile craft can be understood as different tasks carried out by the same operation. A fire almost completely destroyed the Ugāle Watermills in 1933. This date marks a clear turning point in the history of the site.

The site includes a regulating weir built of stone masonry, with wooden sluice gates. A road crosses the weir. The mill site thus includes a clearly defined technical structure alongside the buildings. The weir, sluices and their different materials give the history an architectural dimension: it is about not only past work, but also construction by the river. For travellers interested in historic craftsmanship, this technical aspect offers a distinct way to explore the site.

The Engure connects Lake Usma and Lake Puze and is a small, picturesque river. The Ugāle Watermills are located on its bank in Dzirnavas.

Mini Golf and a Canoe Trip

The Usmas Golf Club adds a distinctly different attraction. It is right beside the Ugāle Watermills on the left bank of the Engure. The club has a nine-hole mini-golf course set in a meadow landscape; the course is suitable for beginners too. Under its “Golf ABC” programme, the club offers individual or group training, which must be booked in advance. If you are planning a lesson, check the booking requirements beforehand. This makes golf a separate activity alongside the historical focus, with a specific organisational requirement for training.

A canoe route starts at the Ugāle Watermills and runs 7.3 km to Kalnenieki, ending at the bridge over the Engure. The distance gives a clear idea of the route’s length, while river conditions and obstacles may vary. So check the current conditions before setting out. Unlike mini golf, the canoe trip has a set distance but changing conditions—a practical difference to bear in mind when planning.

Choosing the Right Focus

When choosing a holiday apartment in Dzirnavas, this suggests a simple question: should your stay focus mainly on the history of the mills and weir, or would you also like to plan for golf and a water-based activity? The historical details create a cultural focus; mini golf and the canoe route offer two different active options. If you are travelling with others, you can choose the direction of your shared holiday around these interests rather than looking for just one activity. This way, you can pair your search for a suitable base with the kind of stay you want to have.
