Liepene: Coast, Trails and Nature Experiences

Liepene is an interesting starting point for anyone who wants to combine coastal landscapes with active pursuits. In this area, the Jūrtaka follows various stretches of shoreline, passes through Liepene on its 11th stage and offers changing impressions along the way: sandy and pebbly shores, steep coasts with eroded clay, and a shoreline that gradually becomes lower beyond Liepene. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Liepene can therefore choose a location that suits their own travel plans – whether these involve long walks, nature observation or a trip combining several different interests.

Coastal trails with varied landscapes

The 11th stage of the Jūrtaka runs through Staldzene, Liepene, Jaunupe and Oviši. It is not characterised throughout by a single type of landscape. Sandy and pebbly sections alternate along the shores, while eroded clay emerges along the steep coasts. These details make the route varied and help you assess which type of coastal experience you would prefer. For the Staldzene–Liepene section, small forest paths running parallel to the sea are recommended in winter, spring and autumn. This seasonal recommendation is particularly important for planning the day if you do not want to travel exclusively along the open shore.

The surroundings of the Jaunupe River also have their own distinctive feature. During periods of low water, vegetation can grow densely there. Beyond Liepene, the shoreline gradually becomes lower. Those travelling with children or wishing to experience different natural landscapes during their trip can use these differences as a reason not to plan their days around just one long route, but also to include shorter nature-observation outings and peaceful sections.

Guidance for arrival and daily planning

The road T‑V1332 “Pievedceļš Liepenei” provides a specific point of reference. The 1,688.77-metre-long road section was upgraded from a gravel road to a road with a double surface treatment. As part of the work, a shelter for a bus stop was also installed. When choosing your holiday apartment, therefore, first consider which location best suits your planned excursions and desired daily routine.

Relaxation between pine forest and the sea

The character of the area also includes various recreation facilities. The “Vējciems” recreation complex is located in a pine forest on the Baltic Sea coast. The “Liepene” campsite covers a well-maintained area of 5 hectares and is a spacious recreation complex directly on the seashore. These places complement the picture of a landscape where forest and coast lie close beside each other. The “Jēņi” campsite is listed as offering a sauna and a party room for 16 people. Its services are available from 1 May to 31 October.

Orienteering as a special reason to travel

Liepene is also associated with orienteering. The long-established “Kurzemes Pavasaris” orienteering event was intended to take place in Liepene. In addition, the “OKZK 2026” orienteering event is scheduled to take place in Liepene on 17 September 2026 at 16:00. If you coordinate your trip with this date, you should include the date and time in your personal planning. For families or travel groups with different preferences, such an event can complement the coastal trails: part of the day can be spent actively, while other time remains for landscapes and relaxation.
