Jūrkalne: Cliffs, Suiti Culture and Nature Experiences

Jūrkalne combines a striking coastal landscape with nature trails, regional culture and unusual experiences. The cliff reaches up to 20 metres above sea level in places and is one of the defining landscape features of the area. The cliff includes a sandy beach. Boating takes place on the Rīva River in spring and autumn.

Jūrkalne is part of the Suiti cultural region, which connects Alsunga, Basi, Gudenieki and Jūrkalne and has been included on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List. An important cultural site is Jūrkalnes Sv. Jāzepa Roman Catholic Church. It is one of the three historic Suiti churches. A copy of “Maģie Suiti”, Jūrkalne’s first and only newspaper, is also on display at the Jūrkalne Library.“Maģie Suiti” is also on display.

Further insights are provided by the Vētru Museum and the Jūrkalne Tautas nams. The museum tells of victims of storms on the Baltic Sea, as well as antiques found on the beach or recovered from the depths of the sea. The Tautas nams is housed in a former inn built in the mid-18th century. The Jūrkalne Public Centre and Library has a room for women weavers and events on the second floor. Vējturu nams, a nature concert hall, is also located on the grounds of the Jūrkalne Nature and Recreation Park. It can be used by the municipality, the public and businesses for public and private events.

The ethnographic ensemble “Maģie suiti” is tasked with preserving and promoting Suiti traditions. Traditional dishes such as žograuši, spēkrauši, vētras rauši and milk fish soup are offered in the Suitošanas master class. Near Jūrkalne, the monument “Cerību bura” marks a location from which part of the Latvian population fled to Sweden between autumn 1944 and spring 1945. This allows you to expand your stay to include culture, remembrance and regional traditions.

In Jūrkalne, enthusiasts enjoy windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Tandem paragliding flights are also offered year-round in Jūrkalnes pagasts.
