Gruaro combines cultural history with paths along the Lemene. The Mulini di Stalis, the Chiese di San Giusto and San Tommaso, and the Sarcofago Romano offer the town different historical points of reference; GiraLemene and a walking activity along the river complement them with cycling and walking routes. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Gruaro, this allows you to tailor your stay to your preferred balance between culture, activity and nature.

Mills and churches with a long history

The Mulini di Stalis are a medieval mill complex with two mills on the Lemene River and are located immediately after entering the municipality of Gruaro. The older mill was first mentioned in documents in 1432, while the newer one dates from the late 19th century.

The Chiesa di San Giusto also reaches far back into the town's history: it has been documented since 1186 or 1187. The present church was built between 1482 and 1513 on the remains of an earlier church. In the Chiesa di San Tommaso, the walls, the apse and the round arch between the nave and the choir are decorated with fresco cycles from the Friulian-Venetian school dating from the late 15th century to the first half of the 16th century.

The Sarcofago Romano broadens this historical perspective. It is dated to late antiquity, specifically the 4th or 5th century, and was discovered near Bagnara in 1981. The Sarcofago Romano can currently be viewed outside the primary school.

Along the Lemene

For active pursuits, the GiraLemene cycling and walking route begins in the municipality of Gruaro at the Boldara footbridge and leads to the Mulini di Stalis. The GiraLemene route is 38 kilometres long and connects with literary references to Nievo, Pasolini, Russolo and Hemingway. In this way, it combines movement along the route with a cultural theme that extends beyond individual buildings.

For a shorter walking itinerary, there is the activity “Passeggiata lungo il Lemene tra acque placide e antichi mulini”. It starts in Gruaro and follows a level route of approximately 6.5 kilometres. Along the Lemene, it conveys the history of the Boldara mill and reveals the natural features of this area. It is led by an environmental hiking guide authorised under Regional Law L.R. E.R. No. 4/2000 and subsequent amendments. The different route lengths help you plan your daily rhythm between the 38-kilometre GiraLemene route and this level route of approximately 6.5 kilometres.

An annual event in Stalis

Since 2001, the event “Stalis tra arte, storia e natura” has taken place every year on the first Sunday in June. It is organised by the municipalities of Cordovado, Gruaro and Sesto al Reghena.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Gruaro, you can therefore consider whether historic sites, frescoes and mills or paths along the Lemene should shape your stay. For families with different interests, the combination of culture, a 38-kilometre route and a level route of approximately 6.5 kilometres offers several planning options. This means you can choose accommodation according to your preferred daily rhythm: longer route experiences, a level activity or cultural and historical discoveries.
