Holiday apartment in Seren del Grappa: Mountains, Trails and History

Seren del Grappa is an appealing destination if you would like to combine mountain landscapes, history and farming traditions on your trip. Between trails on Monte Grappa, museums, a church and traditional forms of agriculture, you will find plenty of options for active days and days of cultural interest.

Landscape in the Valle di Seren

Above Seren del Grappa lies the spring known as Acqua della Salute; it is fed by the two springs Valscura and Peùrna. The Conca delle Bocchette is a glacial cirque formed during the last Quaternary glaciation, approximately 130,000 to 10,000 years ago, with diverse vegetation as well as traces of earlier settlements and rustic buildings. The Valle di Seren is home to a mixed forest with silver firs, Norway spruces, deciduous trees and beeches.

Walks and trails on Monte Grappa

The Valle di Seren is a starting point for walks and excursions. Several trails begin at the car park near the Acqua della Salute, including the ascent to Cima Sassumà. The Rifugio Bocchette is a mountain refuge at an altitude of 1,300 metres on the northern side, at the foot of Monte Grappa. The Alta Via 8 runs along the ridges around the Valle di Seren and is also known as the Alta Via degli Eroi.

The Anello M.te Salarol – da Valpore is an approximately four-hour circular trail that begins and ends at the car park near the Aula Verde Valpore. It partly follows the Alta Via degli Eroi; along the way, you can choose between old trenches from the First World War and an easier path below the ridge. The Conca delle Bocchette section of the Anello naturalistico del Grappa begins at the Rifugio Bocchette di Mezzo, which can be reached from Seren del Grappa. The Centro didattico Valpore is open from May to October.

The Sentiero Bosco degli Eroi is reached from Seren del Grappa via the road to Cima Grappa. At the level of the Albergo Forcelletto, the trail branches off towards the Rifugio Bocchette. The trail includes material traces, sculptures, poems, works of art and stories connected with the First World War.

Local history and art

The Museo Fotografico della Grande Guerra “Eugenio Secco” contains 170 reproductions of historical photographs documenting the events of the First World War in the Feltrino area and on the Massiccio del Grappa. For visits, you can contact the municipal library in the same building; it is open on Wednesdays from 09:00 to 12:00 and on Fridays from 14:00 to 18:00.

The main altar of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena preserves an altarpiece painted in oils on canvas in 1504 by Jacopo da Valenza, who was active from 1485 to 1509, depicting the Madonna and Child as well as Saints John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene in a carved, gilded wooden frame. A cross stands on the summit of nearby Monte Pertica in memory of the victims of the conflict. The artwork “Resurrection” measures 410 × 110 × 110 cm.

Farming traditions and regional topics

Fojaroi are buildings constructed at higher elevations that were used in summer as living quarters, accommodation for shepherds and animals, and for cheese production. In the Valle di Seren on the northern side of the Massiccio del Grappa, only a few Fojaroi remain, some of which can be visited. The museum in Borgo Sagrilot addresses the topics of haymaking, livestock housing and wine production. The change from Zern to Col dei Bof could indicate that a settlement originally used seasonally at a higher elevation developed into a permanent residential centre specialising in keeping dairy cows and dairy farming.
