Arabba Between Passes and the Dolomites
A holiday apartment in Livinallongo Del Col Di Lana gives you access to a place with a high-alpine character, a rich history and diverse trails. Arabba is a hamlet of the municipality of Livinallongo del Col di Lana, located at an altitude of 1,602 metres at the foot of the Sella Group and the Passo Campolongo and Passo Pordoi. Within the municipality, Arabba is therefore situated in a distinctive mountain landscape where nature experiences, sports and cultural discoveries can be combined.
History and Ladin Heritage
The summit of Col di Lana was captured by Italian troops after a mine was detonated during the night of 17–18 April 1916. The Museo storico Col di Lana “Carlo Ragnes” displays war relics in two rooms on the building’s first floor and in its ground-floor atrium. The Museo Ladino Fodom covers the history of the valley, from the earliest archaeological finds to the major events of modern times, including the First and Second World Wars. At the same time, it documents the local environment through its flora, fauna and geology.
Ladin culture is also present in the surrounding area. The Museo di storia, usi, costumi della gente ladina in Pieve was founded to preserve and communicate the ancient Ladin culture in all its facets. The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Giacomo Maggiore in Pieve dates from the 15th century. The Castello di Andraz consists of a structure dating from the 14th century, whose remains were altered several times over the course of history. The castle was built on a rocky spur and fully adapts to its slope and natural morphological features. Educational activities, exhibitions and guided tours take place there in summer. In Arabba, the Vecchio Mulino recalls former craftsmanship: the site is regarded as a place of remembrance and as a remarkable example of folk engineering, with its gears, carved from very hard wood, still completely preserved.
Hiking Trails with History and Panoramic Views
The Pieve di Livinallongo–Col di Lana–Monte Sief route passes near the entrance to the Italian mine tunnels used to blow up the summit of Col di Lana during the night of 17 April 1916. It also reaches a chapel overlooking Col di Lana and offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Dolomites. The mountains around Arabba offer hiking trails through forests and meadows, across streams and up to mountain peaks. Respectful treatment of the habitat is essential when observing nature: marmots, hares and deer can be spotted in the hiking area. Another alpine route, the Ferrata delle Trincee, leads from Porta Vescovo to Passo Padon.
Cycling and Winter Sports Around Arabba
Arabba offers mountain-bike trails of varying difficulty, including single tracks and the Sellaronda MTB Tour, which starts in the village. From Arabba, road-cycling routes cross Passo Pordoi, Passo Campolongo, Passo Falzarego, Passo Gardena, Passo Fedaia and Passo Giau. In winter, the Arabba–Marmolada ski area is part of Dolomiti Superski. Arabba is also one of the starting points for the Sellaronda ski circuit.
