The Museo della Pietra e degli Scalpellini is divided into five thematic areas. On the ground floor, an archaeological exhibition presents finds from the Castellavazzo area dating from Roman times. The fifth area is dedicated to Castellavazzo’s stone-related heritage and displays tools, photographs, and contemporary accounts of the local generations of stonecutters. The Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta in Castellavazzo also tells of the town’s long history: it dates from 1165 and was expanded in 1524. The two dates mark two construction phases of the building. The altarpiece in the Church of San Quirico and Giulitta was created by Egidio Dall’Olio and depicts the martyrdom of Saint Giulitta and her child, Saint Quirico. The motif of the martyrdom adds a specific example of sacred representation to the building’s history.

Gardona Between History and Hiking Trail

The Gardona fortification was probably built as an outpost of Castello Lavazzo during the Gothic War from 535 to 553. Only the remains of the tower, with its unusual triangular ground plan, have survived from Gardona Fortress. This ground plan is the most striking feature described for the surviving tower.

The ruins of the Gardona fortification can be reached via a hiking trail. A hiking trail from the cement factory leads above the railway line to the ruins, following the route of an old Roman road. For orientation in the area, the route identifies the cement factory as the starting point, the location above the railway line, and the course of the old Roman road. Access and the historical trace are thus brought together in a specific route description.
